Needles and thread

I just got a package of assorted machine needles in my mailbox. ($71.00 of needles is a small package!) Now that I am covered in the needles department I need thread advice. What is your favorite quilting thread and why? Where do you buy Auriful online for a good price? TIA, Taria

Taria, I love Aurifil and just do a Google when I need more. I love it for piecing (hand *or* machine) and for some machine quilting. My last batch was ordered from Red Rock Threads, and it arrived so quickly I almost hadn't finished clicking the Send button when it was in my mailbox. However, my new favorite for machine quilting is the YLI 100 wt. silk thread. Wow! It's wonderful. It's so fine that it almost melts into the fabric, which means it isn't for "in your face" quilting -- but it's perfect for "subtle". Gorgeous stuff.

Hey Taria! I love Aurifil and have had good luck with this site

I also really like the Masterpiece thread but it's a bit pricey. Really like the Yli silk 100 too and you can find that on cones these days. Hope that helps!

I've used Red Rock, too, and found them very good. For picing I like either Aurifil or the fine YKI thread. For quilting I like the heavier weight YLI. Have yet to try silk for quilting... I also like Empress Mills 100% cotton for machine quilting: not as soft as the YLI, but very good in the machine.

I have used Masterpiece that I picked up at a quilt show. It works up nice and all my machines seem to like that. How about for machine quilting Marecella?

Are you guys as cold up in that part of the state as we are here in So Cal.? It has really been cold! Taria

I'm not Jan but I want to hear the answer, too.

I use Aurifil when machine quilting on my Pfaff, in the bobbin on my HobbyQuilter and piecing when my Mettler runs out. I am using the Aurifil to hand sew some binding and it keeps breaking.......so.....I'd wonder about the strength of it on a big machine.....

I've stuck to the 50 wt of Aurifil, Taria. I haven't even tried the heavier ones, though I'm sure they're nice, too. Just give a different effect.

Yesterday we were in the high 40s. *But*! The wind was blowing really hard, so the wind chill factor took us down to the 20s! This is *not* normal. :S

I've only tried it for piecing so far. Someone had a sale on the big cones (3,000 yd or something) and I just got a light, medium and dark color.

I have so many spools of Mettler silk finish and quilting thread that it will be a while before I run out and need to buy something new for the quilting part. I have a decent collection of YLI thread for quilting too. That thread box is kind of like Roberta's bottomless scrap basket, the spools just seem to never run out.

It's been cold and we're whimpy here about cold ;-) Low 30's at night and 50's during the day. Hey, I can hear that laughter from some of you! :-) Seriously though, when you don't own a heavy coat or gloves it feels darn chilly.

Lol... what can I say.... it's a snow storm day and you start talking thread... what's a girl to do?? :-) Yes, I run the aurifil 50 in all my machines big and small.... same with the Masterpiece and the Yli. Since Superior changed it's distribution policy, it's harder to find Masterpiece at an affordable price, but I really like it for the cotton snob in me.

Taria, You might be interested in some of this lady's books. She uses the Yli 100 in her DM and she just won big at Houston. She has a new machine quilting in your home machine book out.

Laurie,

I suspect how friendly it will run in your Hobby Quilter might be dependent on how patient you are with the tension. You may have a dry thread issue? Or has it been around for a while?? Have you made up your mind which model you are trading in on yet? Or just still enjoying the shopping?! I've tweaked the heck out of my Gammill and I can run just about any thread in there... but I have the towa gauge and I'll play on a practice sandwich until I get the look I want before I start. Play with it :-) It's fun! The only thing I've heard is that some of the Presencia threads have issues with colors running so I just stay the heck away from them. With all the allergy issues my DD has, the last thing I'm gonna do is corner myself into throwing chemicals into the clothes washer... unless I win the lottery and get a separate laundry room to play in

I haven't decided.....not sure how much of a business I want to have. Right now I am quilting for my quilting group and myself......keeps me very busy! I really liked the Gammill I test drove at PIQF.......my $ right now is going to DD#2 who is in her final year at Berkeley and DD#1 who decided, at age 28, to quit work to go back to school full time. We are helping supplement her non-existent income.

I will seriously do some shopping when I can actually make a purchase.

They are all good machines..... you see people do fabulous quilting with every brand and every size.... it just depends on what you think is good for you. Good for you for helping your kids out with the college! But seriously, they make changes to them all constantly so who knows what will be different next year.

Now I must go put on my snow clothes because my husband is stuck in traffic and not able to make it home for snow play... he'll pay for that And they just changed the forecast model... instead of a foot of snow... 2 feet.... wow... snow quilts anyone?
