Tis a pain on days like this to bundle up, but it sure beats living in Alaska this time of year!! I don't know how they do it!!!!

Already back home where it is nice and warm. Think I'll spend the rest of my day drinking hot cocoa and getting some quilting done. One thing nice about all this cold weather - it really puts me in the mood to quilt!!

That's what I was going through last week. I don't think I have SAD or whatever it's called, but all the cold and snow last week with no sun was really getting to me. Today, though, even though I think we've made it all the way up to 3 or 4 degrees, the sun's shining, and it seems much more tolerable.

Well, okay - I guess. That's an acceptable explanation in my book (since I sometimes do the same thing on weekends, when I've proclaimed loudly to anyone in hearing range that I'm sleeping in on Saturday!).

It's 1:30 pm here in southern Minnesota, and the temperature is up to

4.5 degrees F, but the wind has picked up a bit, so the wind chill is

-8. However, the sun is shining, and that helps to lift the spirits.

I am in southwestern NY, a ways south of Buffalo.

It is currently a balmy 16F here with a windchill of 13F (in other words it mostly feels like 3F outside). We are supposed to get more snow today and tomorrow, though it is supposed to get up into the low

20s temperaturewise on Friday before dipping back down to single digits or low teens on Saturday.

Howdy!

Grew up in s.Tx. w/ that kind of winter (I hated it).

I like some *winter* w/ my winter. Not the ice storms, tho'.

R/Sandy--quilting & watching the cold & ice storm blow in (we went to see "I Am Legend" this afternoon: wonderful movie! I'm still trying to unclench my nerves from the tension... and I don't mean my husband)

How do we stand it? We wear lots of layers - thermal underwear, or my favorite - silk underwear. The only problem with layers is if you have to take a bathroom break. Takes awhile to get it all down and all back up!

Okay, so it's cold, and we here in Alaska just sent it off to you to share. So nice of us I know. Week before last it was in the -20 range. This past weekend it got up to 45, today it is back down close to zero and snowing.

Speaking of no snow days, when I moved to Alaska in 1989 out in one of the bush Eskimo villages, we had several weeks of -40 weather. Yes, I know that that is cold, but I am from Michigan originally, and don't miss the damp humidty at all, weather in summer or winter. I have always said for the past 19 years, I will take -20 in Alaska rather than Zero in Michigan. It is a world of difference. And no snow days. Now where I live, closer to Anchorage, we've had 2 snow days and one wind day, i.e. signs blowing over, roofs blowing off, debris flying through the air and breaking windows of cars driving. Not a hurricane technically since it was in the winter, but hurricane force winds. But that is another story of winds blowing down the valleys and over the glaciers.

Just thought that I would share.

Steve,

I said the same thing about cold and humidity when I moved from central Indiana (in December 1969) to Williams (30 mi west of Flagstaff), Arizona. I didn't feel as cold in Williams when the temperature was down to 3 or 4 as I did in Indiana when the temperature was 32 or above.

And thanks for sharing! Actually it is very interesting to hear what the Alaskan temperatures and weather conditions are like. My husband says there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. That's true to some extent.

Who would want to beat that :-)

It sounds bad enough in F but when you change it to C it is even worse lol

All of you north of Mississippi need to get your act together. The robins are here and racing their engines to head home. We're just about out of worms and your birds are considering alternatives. Not even the snakes are safe. I am predicting an early spring for you. Polly
