OT Caramels and Pickles and QI

After reading before the holidays about Leslie's caramels I decided to try a batch. As I was making the first batch the phone rang and while I was looking for the phone, scorched the batch a bit. So needed to make another batch to which I added peanuts. DH said first batch didn't taste scorched so had lots of caramels and my Christmas company thought they were wonderful.

I also made dill pickles this fall. Can't remember who on this list provided the receipt but made dill pickles, and also pickled carrots. DDIL had asked for pickles and pickled carrots and we finally tried them a couple weeks ago when all the "kids" were home. They couldn't get enough and they were a definate hit.

Thanks Ladies!!!!!

Mid November I took my cat to the Vet for his yearly check-up. I knew the cat wasn't as healthy as even back in the summer as he was having trouble eating. Turned out he had lost most of his teeth. Vet told me he thought my 16 year old cat deserved and earned soft food anyway!! After about a week of soft food, he couldn't even lick the gravy off his food without hurting. DH and I decided that we would not let our cat suffer, so one morning on my way to work I took the cat on his final ride and dropped him off at the Vet's. DH felt really bad for me........he was going to take him for me. We had discussed the end result, just hadn't picked a day. But I knew it was time.

I miss my cat terribly and still think I hear him at the door wanting in. DH and I are close to retiring and won't get another pet. It will be nice to be able to pack up leave at a moment's notice for a few days without worrying about the animals at home.

So sad to hear about your QI. We had to make that decision with our German Shepherd a few years ago. The house is ever so quiet those first few months.

Congrats on the successful culinary efforts!

Sorry to her about your cat Ann. It can be a hard decision to make.

I have just pickled my second batch of beetroot (red beet I believe you call them). Last summer was the first time that I had done them and they were such a hit that I had to do them again. I just do small batches each time, picking them as they get to about 3" across. Bread and butter cucumbers will be next. DH is the only on that eats dill pickles here, so don't bother doing them lol

Thanks Dee

I do beet pickles too, about every other year or so as I am the only one who eats them. I'm the only one that eats dill pickles too but now that my Sons have grown up, I have girls who like them I figured it's worth the extra work to make them. I've tried them before but never happy with the results. The receipe I got from this list is the best!!!

Thanks Kate Years ago DS #1 smuggled the kitten in the house and had him hid for a few days before he was discovered by the rest of the family so the 2 of them had a strong bond. He now sees the cat whenever he comes home, a couple times a year. Back in early summer he said the cat wouldn't make the winter. Cat was healthy for his age so the two of them must have had a good talk when DS was home last.

Ann, I'm so sorry to hear about your cat -- it's never easy to make this kind of decision. I'm still missing my little Tuppence, and she's been gone for over two years now, but we still have Dexter. I know what you mean about it being nice to be able to pick up and go without worrying about animals, but I can't bring myself to be dog-less; I'll be getting another one when the time comes, I'm sure.
