OT: October

October is Breast Cancer month. Having lost one breast to cancer, it is so important for me to get the message out...Get a mammogram!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was hit 2X and both times it was seen on a mammo. Now I had a mammo for the other breast and an abnormality was noticed. Had a ultra sound to verify and am now waiting for an appointment for a needle biopsy. Please ladies and gents, tell your sisters, mothers, aunts, friends, and wives and any ladies you may know to get a mammo. BTW men are not exempt from breast cancer so tell your husbands, fathers etc. to examine their pecs for any lumps.

Please do have your mammograms, they are very important. My cancer was discovered in August. I begin chemo treatment tomorrow. I could not feel the lump, it was found on the mammogram.

Niece had breast cancer at age 26. Found a large lump. They were moving and she got 'hit' with a box. Her DH took her to the hospital immediately.......and the nightmare began. She's past the 6 year mark now and has 2 lil girls. Sooner you catch it the better your chances are. There's NO breast cancer on either side of her family.

So start early and check yourself the SAME DAY every month. If something doesn't feel 'right' have it checked out even if you just had a Mammo 2 months ago. Some grow VERY FAST like hers did.

Butterfly (had my first mammo at age 25 and every year since. I'm just 'lumpy' but I'm glad I do)

Do your self exams as well, mammograms are great, particularly in post menopausal women, but not as reliable in premenopausal women, so don't let a mammogram give you false reassurance, my mum had breast cancer at

43, even after she'd found the lump and they knew where to look on the images that couldn't find it on the mammogram. Her father also had breast cancer, so it looks like it's in the family, but genetic screening hasn't found any of the known genes, I'll be discussing with the doctor at my annual what screening program I should follow.

Daughter had cancer at age 48. I got hit 1st time at age 65. Had a lumpectomy. Was good for 4 years when it hit again. No cancer in the family and had genetic testing. Daughter did not get from my side of family. Talk to your doctor about a mammo. In the meantime, do self examinations monthly.

She's a survivor and I wish her well.

I had genetic testing because daughter developed cancer. Nothing from my side of family but it may be from her father's side. Can't tell now because they're all dead, daughter included who died from something else other than cancer.

Rita, So sorry to hear your news. It is the fear of every one of us who have survived. It is hard to believe that I am 8 years cancer free except for skin cancers. Still a worry, but Mammo is the 19th, so I am doing what I can. I am one of those Butterfly mentioned that had a Mammo in Feb. one year and by April I knew something was wrong. Had to insist Dr. order another Mammo. SHE wanted me to come in for office call and then order the mammo. I said no, mammo first. Never got to the office call, her office was in same building as the diagnostic center and they made her come to their side. Rough times, but I hope they are over now. Can't reapeat enough what Rita advises! GET YOUR MAMMOGRAMS!!!!!!! Anna Belle in Palm Bay
