OT:when it rains.....

Hi all...just need to vent/ramble here. DS started coughing and running a fever last Monday night. We didn't worry too much about it until Tuesday morning when, after he had been up for a while, but not running around, his temp registered at 103.7. ok...off to walk in hours we go. They ordered a chest xray and did urine...everything normal. said if fever got higher to bring him back Wednesday....we were back wednesday because it got over 104...they tested for both strains of flu and sent us home. Wednesday night, fever peaked at

104.8 and I was ready to take him to the ER......we gave him the choice of ER or tepid bath. He chose bath, then proceeded to nearly bust my eardrum with his extremely loud and high pitched screams (it was actually a little warm, but to him it felt like icewater). He was in for about 15 minutes and the temp started dropping. When hubby and I went to bed, it was down to 99.9...phew!

Thursday, I kept him down but by then, his coughing was lasting for about 10 minutes an episode and he was saying his chest was hurting. Called Friday and left message for regular doc because the coughing was so bad that DS wasn't getting any sleep and was to the point of tears from exhaustion (nobody else was really sleeping either). He wasn't in, but another doc got the message and ordered Tussinex.....supposed to work on the coughing AND help him sleep...apparently it just keeps him awake and isn't doing much for the cough yet.

Saturday, the fever is back and it looks like my son has painted his entire head in bright red paint....call in to see if they want me to bring him (have brief hours on Sat, but no walk in). They ended up calling in an antibiotic for him. Well, last night....FINALLY....his temp was down to 97.9 (he and I normally run low), and today it's right around 98.4-.8. HOWEVER, he was complaining of chest pains from coughing so much, so back we went....and he was supposed to start his GT classes today....told him health was more important than history because we can always look at history another time...it doesn't change....ok....so the doc listened to his chest and took another nose swab. Turns out that DS has walking pneumonia and it can definitely be heard in his right lung!!!

ARGH!!!! Needless to say, he is not at class right now, but doc said if the fever didn't come back tonight or tomorrow morning, then DS could go to the classes - also, it gives another day of antibiotics a chance to work on this. Doc said he'd call tomorrow afternoon and Wednesday afternoon to check and see how things are going. Said that, with walking pneumonia, it could calm down for a bit then the fevers could return, but either way, to expect the coughing to go on for another week.

As of today, DS is taking zithromax, prednisone, and rotating between advil and tylenol, not to mention the nightly dose of tussinex with Vicks and socks on his feet....argh....something has got to give and definitely before hubby's surgery...and sadly, the closest relative is Mother, who really needs to be working not taking time off, even if it is to "help" out

Thanks for letting me ramble.....I think most of it is due to near total exhaustion

They say don't like to give antibiotics - but they're going to kill somebody with the waiting for them when they're going to end up giving them anyway! Hope all is well soon! Judy from Mass

Hope all is improving now and you are all getting some sleep. Please give your DS a very gentle hug from the UK. As a parent I know how scary those very high temperatures are and I can still 30+ years on remember how cold a tepid bath felt when I was given them to get my temperature down as a child. As an adult I have occasionally subjected myself to a cool shower instead.

I just wanted to thank you all. I feel better knowing that there is support, even if it is cyber-support and not a "RL" shoulder to cry on.

DSs temp has been 98.8 since yesterday morning, so the doc gave the go ahead for him to be part of the GT classes starting today (which happened to be a field trip). I don't know what to think about the meds, but I'm not impressed with how long it took for all of this to happen. His coughing is decreasing a little every day - in fact, after we went to bed last night, I don't remember hearing him cough at all!! I guess that could mean that he didn't wake up coughing or I was just so exhausted I didn't hear it!! However, his color is back to normal, his spirits are back up and he was back to antagonizing his sister over breakfast - I'm taking these as good signs!

Will see how he feels when I pick him up in a little while. Hopefully everything went well (teacher didn't call me to come and get him, so I'm assuming things were fine). We have to go to his counselor's after he finishes school today, so it's more than likely going to be an early night for everyone. DH said he is going to spend some time with DS tonight, cleaning up DSs room (spent 15 minutes looking for a wallet only to find nothing but piles of "stuff" shoved into places where he isn't supposed to have anything!!!). It will be a good bonding time and will give me the chance to get clothing folded and such....or vacuum DDs room, which is not something I like doing at night for some reason. ah well....he appears to be on the mend, so I will keep saying prayers until we know this stuff is finally out of his system.

With regards to tepid baths....DH and I never had them. DH was put into ice-water (yes, with actual ice cubes still visible) and I was given alcohol rubdowns. In hindsight, it's a wonder we survived childhood since the temperature changed so fast...we could have gone into febrile seizures...but that was what was suggested back when we were young......lol
