Smaller than a dime?

did you try a small circle of the cardboard from cereal box or other empty food packaging? i've ironed fabric on those when i do applique sometimes. dont recall having any probs with those. i use it to do dresden plate units too, ironed'em with no probs. just a thot. j.

I just had a wild thought! (not too unusual of course!). How about jeans rivets? You would have to find some way of holding them to press, but they would be small!! . In message , Polly Esther writes

Really? I'd believe 1.6+cm, but 1.6+mm???

And please don't press over a watch battery, even a dead watch battery. Seriously bad juju can leak out, otherwise known as electrolyte. Some of it is lye.

I'm going to try the Circleeze that Cindy thought of. That 'threads and more' place sure has lots of gadgets. We need to get our Gadget Queen well so she can survey the entire store. Polly

I don't like those around anyway because of the worry about the animals eating them. Georgia is pretty civilized but Ginger will put anything in her mouth. I don't think they are flat enough anyway. Taria

I wonder if x-ray film is resistant to the heat of an iron....the drying rollers on the developers are fairly hot. I have lots of the stuff so I can check it out tonight and send you some if it doesn't melt.

to be continued....

Cardboard works great. I've used washers and not gotten a shiny circle in the middle but have scorched my fingers because the do get hot! Karen Kay Buckley makes mylar circles in many sizes - Perfect Circles and Bigger Perfect Circles I think they're called. Lots of on-line shops carry them. I have the smaller size and they work really well.

I use the iron resistant plastic sheet, I think it's called mylar. The most difficult thing is to get a nice circle to start off with, but I managed to fine a 1/2 inch circle punch, which is about 13mm. I tried cardboard as well, but if I used starch, it was more difficult to get out that the plastic.

I've bought about every gadget they have, Polly. Perhaps I can fill in until the REAL Gadget Queen gets back on her feet.

Batteries are not a good idea. If this is something a child or animal may get a hold of. Batteries, even hearing aid, have harmful components in them and are harmful if swallowed. A battery may explode if put in a fire.

Some of it is a lot more toxic than lye.

You're right, I was thinking of using it to mark round, not to heat up. There'd be an unpleasantly chemical bang/phut.

I think an ancient Roman obol might be significantly smaller than any modern coin.

Polly,

I have one of those tiny little metal circles meant to add 1/4 inch to the outside of whatever sort of piece you are wanting to make. It does have a tiny little hole in the center but I don't think it would be a problem since you have to have a really sharp pencil point in order to use it for it's intended purpose. I tried to fins a link to one but not sure of exactly what it's called and can't find one right now.....even though I know google is my friend.

It's a small flat round brass (?) washer like gizmo with a very small hole in the center. Mine was from a quilting store but I have never been able to find pencil sharp enough to fit into the center.

Judie, I have the same thing for tracing around a template to add a 1/4 in. seam allowance and don't know the name of it, either. But I think it's too thick to make the neat flat circles that Polly would need. The size would probably be right, tho.

its a 'magic seam marker'. i did a search thru quiltshops.com for shops in mississippi. then checked those with a search for 'magic seam marker'. sadly none of the three shops had it. not sure where would be the next closest for Polly to get one. its so tiny and not expensive that i'd bet the postage would be more than the cost of the marker. unless she finds some other things she wants at one place or if someone else can send her one they get at their LQS for the cost of a stamp. i'd do it if i lived over there, heck i'd be inclined to drive down and deliver it myself. i just cant swim that far. sorry. j.

Or I can just send mine as soon as I find it. As I said before, I've never used it although at one time I must have thought I needed to have it.

Polly, do you want me to send it? Just let me know and it will be in the mail ASAP,

Jeanne,

You know, every single time I try to find something on the internet and have a problem I know that you could find it in a google second. I even ask myself what I think you would use as a search term.

Thanks, Jeanne

Thank you all but I've ordered the Circleeze that Cindy thought of. Where we found this tool is www.threadandmore . They very firmly say that there is sometimes a delay in their processing orders and shipping could take a while. No matter really. I've done about all the 'eyes' I can stand for now. Polly
