I have been working on this wall hanging for my son who likes Japanese art. It is finished excep for the binding. I have been debating about using a black binding or using a color.
Any ideas?

Definitely the black! Don't detract from the rest of that beautiful piece!
Great job, Boca Jan!!!

I would favor black myself, mainly because the squares across the top and bottom are not full squares all the way across. Any colored binding would highly emphasize that, whereas black would downplay so much as to not be an issue whatsoever. fwiw

I would say black also...thsi is really a terrific piece...Nice job!!!!!!!!!!!! Mauvice in central Wi
Yup. I vote for black too. Allison
I'd go with black. Adding a color there might seriously detract from the rest of the quilt. Lovely job and great quilt.

It's beautiful whichever way! Black would be beautiful, of course; but I would try it against the gorgeous gold in the blocks close to the top and bottom. That might be stunning, I would have to see it to judge properly, but I think it is worth a look anyway. . In message , Boca Jan writes

Take Pat's great idea a step further- gold piping and then black binding.

I'd vote for black too. What a beautiful wall hanging Heidi from Germany "Boca Jan" schrieb:
I like this possibility! Otherwise I think I'd go with the black consensus.
I'd use black, perhaps with tiny gold piping in the binding. (The Piping Hot Binding instructions and tool make it easy.) I think anything else is going to distract from the center.

Thank you all for your opinions. I like the idea about the gold piping, however I am fresh out and have no gold material left to make any, nor do I have any black/gold fabric. I will go with the black binding. I should be finished today and will repost the picture.
Thank you again!
And I was going to say RED piping and then a black binding. In Asian cultures, red is the color of joy and happiness and there *is* that red lantern in the hanging! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Black is the answer to complete your stunning quilt.
Black or gold binding. It's gorgeous! Debra in VA See my quilts at
I say, don't do either. Use a facing. It's a good way of binding without the binding which sometimes detracts from the project. IMO your wall hanging doesn't need "a stopper" which is what a binding would be. Donna in Bellevue
I think a narrow gold piping and then a wide black border.
That's just lovely, Jan! I think either black or gold would be beautiful
-- perhaps a black binding with gold piping?
Oops! I've just read the rest of the replies, and I see that I wasn't the only one with the same idea and that you no longer have any gold fabric.
