Cutters/Trimmers

Ok, since we're all looking at our favorite stuff....I have a few questions for everyone.

Do you like your cutter/trimmer? Does it actually cut straight? (Do you notice or is it minute enough that you don't mind?)

Does anyone have a "Carl" or a "Dahle" cutter? I think I've fallen in love with these cutters. They cut STRAIGHT! They can handle more than a few sheets at a time and there's no guessing where it will cut. I've tested a Dahle and it was sooooooooooooo smooth! (I guess I could go with a "guillatine" type cutter and it would do the same thing- straight, know where the exact cut line is, etc...) Does anyone have any experience comparing the types of cutters? If you do, I'm all ears! :-)

I'm disgusted with the Fiskars cutters. They don't cut straight and there's a margin of error in the cut line that I don't like (because when it's too close to the pre-marked line and you try to fix it, you tear up the paper....or that's what it does for me.) I've been using a X-acto knife and a metal straight edge on a cutting mat, but that's been getting hard on my wrists.

Oh, and if anyone wants my Fiskars, I currently have 2 each of the 9 & 12 inch trimmers (and extra blades) that are welcome to go to a new home. Email me at snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com and they're yours!

Thanks! :-) Theresa in IL

I have the Cutterpede and the Fiskars Euro Rotary Trimmer. I Like both and the both cut straight at least to me and the Euro trimmer has the sizes marked on the plate. I hated my regular Fiskars trimmers too, the always seemed to curve at some point so I gave them away. I used the Carl refills on another 12" cutter from EK Success called the Snap & Trim it's smaller than the Cutterpede and is in my class kit.

I love my fiskars. I"ve been using it for 8 years without a cutting problem. Sounds like a quality control issue. Too bad. I have a fiskar, but if no one pipes in I'll volunteer to take them off your hands. Definately interested in the 9 inch. I don't have that size. I keep an eye to see how this develops.

I have noticed that I have to make sure when I cut with my Fiskars that I push the blade to one side of the other in the channel to get a straight cut. There is some wiggle room in there.

When I bought my first cutter a few months ago, I had a choice between the Fiskars and the Cutterpede. The lady at the shop said the Fiskars was the "Rolls Royce" of cutters, but that the Cutterpede was MUCH more popular. I gave both a try in the shop and was sold on the Cutterpede immediately. I've had no problems since. I also like the fact that it's marked in inches as well as cm's for us "metricated" (peaks at Sabrina *g*) folk in the rest of the world. I do agree that there is a bit of guessing as to precisely where the cut will be, but the margin is so little, that it does not really bother me at this stage. Maybe in a year or so, I'll look out for a guillotine type cutter aswell

I have the Fiskars and the cutterpede. I guess I haven't used the cutterpede enough because I don't like it! It doesn't cut where I want it to. I LOVE the Fiskars, yes it wiggles sometimes but usually it's when I push to hard. If you will mail to Canada I'd love a 12 inch! Barb:o)

I have a 16" Genisis trimmer, which is gold standard!, and I have the new CM 12" trimmer, along with the CM personal trimmer. I love all three!

I tried that and never seem to get what I think I should... I guess I am picky aobut straight lines.

Thanks for the idea, though!

Theresa...I have several cutters/trimmers and find they all have their pros and cons. Most of the Fiskars type can cut a little off! With a builder husband you can imagine what it is like in this house about things being straight, level and square....LOL He should live so long...I have a lousy eye for straight, level and square....ROFL....near enough is good enough!

I have a TrimCat {guillotine} & RollCat {similar to the Dahle} - both good cutters but heavy and bulky. The Fiskars 12" and 9" have their place but as Lynne says you need to aim for one side or the other, and I find direction of cut and speed also influences the way they cut...too fast...wiggly cut. I generally use the pad of my thumb and push away, rather than pull towards me or you can find the card/paper/photo slips. Trying to fix it lead to a raggy edge! I have a small CM guillotine which is OK for photo mats and small jobs but not my favourite cutter either...you sometimes get a drag up against the hinge end, particularly with photos. I gave my daughter a little used Maped 12" cutter I had because it never cut straight either and everything slid around. You needed two pairs of hands to work it....LOL Like you I have used metal ruler and craft knife but feel they are extremely dangerous - one slip and A & E here we come! I also have a couple of the roller cutters you use with a ruler - like a pizza cutter but smaller. Too easy to stray off the line with those also.

Recently, I have bought the Provocraft Vizion 12" for £8.99 - cheapest yet - verdict - I love it!!!!! It cuts brilliantly and so far no wiggly edges. Last week I also found a little trimmer in the Poundland shop for £1.00 - verdict on this cheapo - again brilliant and straight cuts. I even bought DD one and she loves it too! Unfortunately it is not branded so I don't know who makes them! Lot of help I am...LOL

I have to chime in for the Cutterpede. I've never used a Fiskers, but the lady at my LSS won't sell anything else and she had used Fiskars for years so thats what I got. Never had any problem with it.

Some of these I owned way before I started paper crafting. I was a breed club secretary and did all their printing to save them money. I have only bought 4 trimmers in the last couple of years :o)

Have been known to adopt the big scissor approach at times....LOL...then you should see my edges!!!! I like your "quaintness" description Sabrina...I will use that to describe my style in future, when anyone dares to comment on the wiggly edges.

I have used both the cutterpede and the fiskers. I really dislike the fiskers. Could never get it to cut straight. So I use the cutterpede. Though I did buy the fiskers that has the retracted rotery cutter. I really like it as it is heavy enough for multiple layers of cardstock, light cardboard as well as matboard. Just my 2cents worth.

I had a Carls personal trimmer in Australia and I loved it! I didn't have any problems with the paper slipping around. I tried a friend's Fiskar trimmer here and it seemed like a piece of crud!

I didn't bring my trimmer but I really wish I did... I've only seen Fiskars ones so far here and I need something to cut with! (I use a metal ruler and blade but it's not nearly as easy as a trimmer...
