OT: Update on thumb/wrist 4 weeks after surgery

Hi

Well it's been just over a month since surgery and things are starting to get better. The pain is a lot less than it has been and I am getting more and more of the movement back. I still can't move the hand to the side or bend the wrist back very far but it will come in time. I am also not allowed to pick up too much with the hand yet as I don't have the strength.

I am have knitting for two weeks and have been loving it. Yesterday I finally picked up a crochet hook and tried to crochet for the first time. Crocheting was a little harder than knitting but it sure felt good crocheting a bit after two months of NO crocheting.

I am still wearing the brace when I'm out and about but at home I only wear the brace to sleep so that is nice as well.

I still have to go to Physiotherapy and then back to the surgeon on the

12th of January and hopefully by then I will be back to almost normal with the hand.

I know my NYCO is an aran sweater and it may not be started right away but considering knitting scarves and toques is getting boring maybe it will help me some to try something different.

Take care Darlene in Toronto

Glad to hear things are getting better Darlene. And I think you only need to cast on three stitches for it to count as your NYCO.

Eimear, with about twelve rows to go to finish the 05 NYCO

I love that idea of only casting on 3 stitches but right now I am still trying to figure out which pattern I am going to use.

Hopefully a couple more days will mean I am able to do more knitting and such.

Glad to hear you're feeling better Darlene. I just spent the last 3 days looking up patterns for my NYCO, finally picked one out. And I'm cheating, I already did the cast on and ribbing for the front today. Couldn't resist-the yarn was calling to me in a loud voice LOL. Marie and the cats

Hi

What is your NYCO so that I can add it to the spreadsheet.

Do you mind if I ask what your problem was and what your surgery entailed? I'm looking at a long-arm (armpit) cast for 6-8 weeks, then a short-arm (elbow) cast for as much as 4 additional weeks after the long-arm comes off. My orthopod is talking about fixing stuff I didn't know needed fixing :P

Good to hear, Darlene. I hope that your thumb continues to improve and that you are back to your pre-pain self soon.

Hi Darlene,

You have made great progress and I'm thrilled. I don't think I'll join the NYCO this year as I don't know what to make for myself.

Hi

I had tendonitis in the thumb/wrist and I had to have release surgery on the tendon that goes around the wrist. I had been wearing a brace since August after having a cortizone shot. I only had to wear a cast for one week right after surgery and then wear a hard plastic brace.

I have what is called DeQuervain's tendinitis. I have how had surgery on both of my hands.

Take care and know that I hope for a speedy recovery.

Nora... be honest... you are too busy making things for so many other people that you don't leave yourself much time to make something nice just for

*you*! :o)

- You and all you do are very much appreciated!

Hi Gem,

Thanks for the compliments. Really, I don't know what to make for myself as I have lots of afghans, sweaters, a muff. What I would like to make is a pair of mittens that wouldn't wear out where the brace comes in contact with the yarn. I've worn holes in three pairs so far.

Hugs,

Nora

:o( What if you lined *just* that area where the brace comes in contact with the yarn?

By the way, we got and are still getting (I can barely see it if I look at the darkness of a tree behind it) a light dusting of snow during the night or very early this morning. Well, the weather network *did* say we were supposed to get snow in this are on New Year's Eve. I just hope everyone is VERY careful driving... some dorky people are just stupid enough to still get behind the wheel of a car after drinking on New Year's Eve... but with snow mixed with it, it will be even worse.

That's my "extra bonus fix". I didn't know I had a problem until the orthopod did the Finkelstein thing and thumped the soft spot at the base of my thumb :P I guess I should be glad to have it diagnosed now, instead of six months from now, right?

Knitting madly (and aggrevating the thumb, no doubt!) W

Good warning, Gem. I plan to stay right here tonight. Last night DH and I saw the movie "Good Night and Good Luck" and then got a bite to eat out after. That was our celebration - getting our night out in before there were quite so many impaired drivers out there. I cast on a vest for him last night and will probably knit and watch TV tonight. Judy

Hi Gemini,

Good idea, maybe I'll buy a piece of leather and put it on top of the brace so it won't rub on the mitten.

Yes, we supposed to have snow here too, anywhere from 1-3 inches. DH and I always stay in on New Years Eve, let the others have the roads. We will watch the ball drop from Times Square with Dick Clark, couldn't miss it with him being back.

Hugs,

Nora

:o) Yes, I'm staying in tonight too! My son is going out with his friends... likely to play pool at their usual place, but I told him I didn't want him on the road with idiot drunk drivers out there... especially when there is snow on the ground too. Matthew and his friends rarely drink, so it's not them... it's the *other* guy that has me more concerned. He will be staying at his best friend's house tonight (I spoke with Kyle about it yesterday) and I will pick him up in the morning to bring him home for our usual New Year's Day dinner of baked ham with pineapple and brown sugar glaze, baked beans, and scalloped potatoes. I'll get the food ready tonight, and only have to put it in the oven tomorrow once he's home. :o)
