How many strands?

I'm about to do my semi-annual xs effort. It's Sunflower Garden Country Quilt Kit by Cross My Heart which is quite small and done on 14 count fiddler cloth. I can't seem to find information about how many strands are supposed to be used and am worried about running out of thread if I use too many.

Any help would be appreciated.

Basically 14ct Fiddler is similar to 14ct Aida, and I usually use 2 strands for both of them.

Fiddler cloth is like Aida, no? So 14 count is like 28 count linen? I'd use two strands. If you don't think that's enough, use three. I find 28 count to be on the edge between 2 and 3 strands for coverage.

Thanks. I like thick coverage so will go with 3 and stitch every other quilt block. If I run out, I'll substitute in the unstitched blocks.

Thanks to Gill as well.

I bought the kit at a rummage sale, more for the little hanger than for the design. Because it's a learning piece, it's not worth it to me to put any additional money into it. The more I stare at the picture, the more I think that a series done in different colors might kill a lot of time until Spring and warmth and sun.

Are you doing 14 ct over 1 I'd assume? Probably 4 strands. My suggestion is to ply them, put them back together and stitch a bit, see how it looks. If it's too thin, you can always add another, or frog and add another. I think 3 plies will be too fine - but it depends on the look you want.

Knowing your talent - I'm sure it will be just fine.

I think that the holes are usually larger on the Fiddler's cloth compared to Aida - so that's why 3 or so plies. Though I may have said 4 in my prior response. Of course, I tend to like full stitches, and use 3 plies frequently on 28 ct. Depending on the thread. Of course, not debating your prowess with a needle, Gill!

FYI, three strands are giving good coverage, for the most part. It may be my imagination but some of the strands seem thinner than others ... I'm not gonna sweat the difference in texture, just adds more interest, right?

I'm stitching every other row of quilt blocks and will fill in with DMC equivalents if it looks like I might run out.

My Mom really loved the Fiddler's cloth for her turtles. Easy to see the holes

You and Ellice are right -- the visible holes really make the stitching easier.
