Camp fire blanket

My daughter has just done a weekend camp with guides and is going on a 9 day camp with them at the end of September. One of the list items is a campfire blanket. I've seen some stuff on the internet that suggests cutting up an old blanket into a poncho. I was thinking about sewing something out of fleece with some sort of stuffing for insulation. Does anyone have any good ideas on what to do? Although it will be spring for the big camp (I'm in Australia) they will still be getting cold nights (0C) at the camp on the outskirts of Sydney.

TIA for any help.

A decent weight of 'real' fleece (polartec or similar type for outdoors clothing, rather than fashion fleece) should be enough on its own. Here's a nice fleece poncho pattern or three:

"Campfire blanket" is not a term I'm familiar with, but if there's a real fire, and if this is to be a poncho type affair, please consider using wool rather than cotton or most synthetic fleeces. Wool self-extinguishes when the source of ignition is removed.

In the early Triassic, when I was a kid, we had woven newspaper mats called "situpons" to sit on in this sort of Girl Scout endeavor, and either wore our old school coats (mostly wool at that time) or a couple of sweaters and a hat.

I would be afraid that any sympathetic fleece would be a big fire hazard around a campfire.

I LOVE CAMP

I have a "car seat poncho" I made for my kid - its no or low -sew and double layered fleece - we live in Anchorage Alaska and it really helps keep teh brat warm without adding bulk under the car seat harness (unsafe). A poncho would be nice because you could keep your butt covered when you sit on the cold ground or bench or log as well as your front.

Thanks to all for suggestions. I am aware of the fire hazards of fleece but I think the benefits outweigh the problems - light and warm. I checked out the fleece in the local fabric shop and they had enough choice for my daughter to like so we will purchase it at the weekend.

I will have to wait a couple of weeks before sewing as I've just had laser surgery on my eye and vision is a little difficult at the moment! If I can't drive then I shouldn't be operating a dangerous vehicle like a sewing machine!
