Pictures of DGD's finished dress

Nor have I, but it's still a skill DGD needs to learn. The proper order for assembling a garment, the laying out and cutting instructions, where and when to use interfacing, seam allowances, etc. are all included in the instruction sheet. I am very happy to guide her, but she needs to be able to interpret pattern instructions for herself as well.

Yes. I have a reason for that, as well as a few other trial-and-error systems I have developed over the years. I will share my hints and tips in a new thread "Subject: On Hemming".

I'll expand on my reasoning in a new thread "On Hemming".

Thanks, Emily.

I felt badly for the girls who spent the night tugging up their entirely inappropriate and poorly fitted strapless dresses. What a shame, no one is giving them any guidance.

Thanks very much. I am so grateful that she wants to learn, and has the will to tackle some of the more difficult techniques.

I'd say "Well done! If this was her first project, she's much better than I. Consider: This is NOT homemade, its "custom-made"!!!

Enjoy and I wish you a great future.

Thanks!

No, not a first project, she wanted to practice on my machines, and we making doll clothes together several years ago. Her first clothing project was a fantastic Halloween costume when she was 11:

and she wanted to make her own Highland Dance Jig costume, so that was another teaching opportunity in 2008:

Thanks, and welcome to alt.sewing.

Thanks. The best part is, she really did do a superb job inside and out. She is not the least reluctant to tear out bad stitching and do it over. I think I finally produced a sewist! ;-)
