OT? - How to deal with a Craigslist customer

Hi all,

I have a Craigslist customer (high school kid or thereabouts) who responds to about 50% of my posts (well, fewer recently as I have been posting things that were a bit more expensive) and then expects me to drive 5 miles or so out of my way to deliver a $2.- item. I'm trying to get it into her head that I can't drive down there for a mini-tray of mondo grass for $1.- or a single pearl strand for $2.- (she probably also doesn't realize that it's a strand rather than a necklace in spite of that you can see that in the picture).

I went back into my ads and put in some delivery restrictions. I mean, you don't get pizza delivery for free below a minimum order either, and they have a limited area too.

My limited Craigslist experience here is that it works quite well for some things with some people (a nice young man came by today for a $8.- tree and bought some additional plants with it), but doesn't seem to for others.

We don't deliver; the buyers pick up from us, or we arrange to meet them at a mutually convenient location if we're already planning to be in their area. Same for FreeCycle or local equivalent. As buyers, we don't ask for delivery either. If she needs delivery, I would charge extra to cover cost of time / fuel / wear & tear on vehicle.

Just put in your ad that the minimum order for delivery is $50.

Thanks Barbara - I've delivered for $20 when it was convenient to me. But yes, otherwise $50 sounds about right, but not

15 miles out. So far I have listed very few things that were over that, but it may very well happen.

Thanks Kathy, I find that particularly convenient when people buy plants. They are big, that one tree I was selling was getting a bit too big to not get damaged by wind in my truck bed. It's just that one person. She emails me about about 50% of what I post, but always only things that cost $1-2, and then expects me to deliver that for free. She says she never comes to town - well I don't usually drive to the area where she lives. If I was going to the beach or diving along that stretch of road it would be a different matter.

I agree! $50 min. or they need to come pick it up!
