Baby Gift

Dear friend's first grandbaby. She bought one of those ready-made bonnets, made from a linen handkerchief. I wish she had spoken with me first as I could have made one for her and incorporated the embroidery in the original design. This bonnet/handkerchief has a tiny cross bedazzled onto 2 sides of the thing. Really shiny but not terribly obtrusive. I could live without them, but probably can't be peeled off. The linen is fine, but pretty stiff.

Anyway, she wants me to embroider the baby's name, birth date and date of baptism on the handkerchief. Then, dates of confirmation and wedding will be added. Bride is supposed to carry the handkerchief or it will be used in the bouquet or something.

Baby's mom would like white thread and I am thinking bright white silk thread. The linen is so fine that I was thinking a simple, elegant outline in script. I have the placement all worked out.

Can anyone give me a hint as to 1)which silk thread you prefer for embroidery and 2) which color would fit the description of "bright white"?

I was looking at YLI and Madeira, but cannot tell which white would work best.

Thanks in advance.

I would not use silk for a baby's bonnet for one good reason: If you must bleach the bonnet, the white silk will turn colors. I ruined an embroidered linen blouse in this manner. It was an accident (I knew not to bleach silk), but accidents happen.

I would use a nice cotton broder thread, size 35 or 40. This is traditionally used for the task, although it's difficult to find in the U.S. Lacis carries it.

Good point, Dianne, but this handkerchief bonnet won't be used as a bonnet since the baptism is already over. It probably won't be used until (or unless) a wedding takes place about 25 years from now. If it is kept in the case and the kid isn't allowed to play with it while growing up, it should stay clean. Still, accidents do happen, I suppose.

That said, would you still not use the silk?

It's always difficult to know for sure with these things. If your heart is set on silk, I like Madeira for its soft sheen.
