Something else I like is a kitted up accessory pack--I bought this for a Jeannette Douglas sampler and it saved me endless time and money looking for specialty threads in colours I would not ordinarily use, and a couple of good buttons. I also like the way some designers, (Just Nan is one I have experience with) add a charm to a chart--charms are one thing that most stashes don't have, and sometimes the right one just makes the design. (Just thought I would keep the "kits or not kits" discussion going)

Living in a place where a needlework store is very far from local, I really appreciate posts like Dyan's. I don't read the marketplace group, as I know I would never be able to afford to buy anything there, so this group is the only place I see new designs, whether by Dyan's posts, or those of people who give links to designs.

We have definitely lost a great deal of pleasure in this group, and like Dianne, I believe it's because of the constant carping - and no, I can't give instances, I don't hold on to unpleasant things.

Like some others, I rarely post, because the unpleasant ones make me feel I have nothing to say that would counteract them. So I say nothing.

I think other posters posting links IS what rctn is about, the difference is that they do not have connections to the links, other than perhaps they received good, prompt service and were pleased, or that they have discovered maybe a site that has a lot of ladybug items that a certain poster will like.

Thinking back, the last time Jan Eaton posted thanking me for suggesting her book Dianne very rudely posted that the book was not a patch on some other book she preferred in the same genre. That sure put Jan off posting again !

I still would argue Jan's book was best. I think it was called Dictionary of Needlework Stitches (it's too much effort at the moment to gather up the hated walker and get to my books to be sure) she took a book that had first been printed in the late '40s and updated it with colour pictures of each stitch (very cleverly done and beautifully clear) plus she had to do it in such a way that it could be translated into several different languages and still have the illustrations and pages come out the same, no mean feat. There are very few stitches I have not found in her book and those were mostly newer ones that arrived on the scene after the first copy was printed. For all I know, they have been added now in later editions.

Stitching magazines from overseas are way beyond my budget, and local ones don't have the os designers represented. Not that it worries me, as I probably have more patterns in my stash than I'll ever finish.

I just like looking at what is available when there's an opportunity, such as a web address or link.

I found many of the magazines started repeating themselves, and frequently had some very basic - too basic - cross stitch patterns. In fact, if your interest lies elsewhere, there was usually one, perhaps two items per mag, the rest was cross stitch.

There still are some interesting ones, Piecework and Inspirations, but you're right, costly.

First, I'm allowed to say that I felt Jan Eaton's new work (I have it) on Mary Thomas's original work in the 30s changed the directions for a French knot which was disappointing and wrong-headed. I pointed out a couple other examples that disappointed me, as well complained that some of the embroideries used for illustration could have been better examples. I doubt my post made Jan Eaton never post again. She fired back that she had the okay of the nephew. I kept her post for a very long time. But I doubt that my comments made her stop posting here. In fact, I don't think she ever posted before that. If she did, it was uncommon.

You're upset that I pointed out that you don't speak for the group. You don't. Period. You seem to be after Dyan even when she contributes. It's allowed. So why do you continue to act in this manner?

So, you see, you may have done that, the very thing of which you accuse me even though you offer nothing to suggest I have done what you say.

Don't be so foolish, this is usenet, anyone can say whatever they want and I certainly have no desire to control anything. Now rctnp was a different thing, had to be monitored and the girl who set it up originally wanted out when she had her baby. Nobody would stand up and in the end she emailed me and asked me outright, would I. So I did, rather than see it disappear. Even there though, the only thing I control is ads - anybody who wants to join can, I pass no judgement though I do frequently when they ask to join pose a question that shows immediately if advertising is their thing.

Now, you know I don't need an "excuse" for disagreeing with you, I just wanted to mention my ornery mood at the time. Lots of times I don't agree and don't say anything because it's just not worth it. It's not posting opinions that's the problem, it's the tone. When I read what you post, it's not that you are disagreeing or taking someone to task, it what I see as a very negative, demeaning, just plain mean "tone" to your words. I don't want to go back and quote what you just wrote about Dyan's posts -- that's more trouble than it's worth -- but if you had just been a bit more polite (for want of a better word at the moment) it wouldn't go against the grain as much. It seems you do quite a good job, too. You know, I STILL can't get that *(&*$&^%#$*^ system to let me in -- VBS! Every now and again it does and I can't just re-join because it tells me that I already belong! Can you make the system dump me (OOOO you get a chance to dump me, isn't that a hoot)? In your haste to advertise you had the credits completely wrong, Dawn(e) did not say she avoided kits.

What's 'negative' about that ? Plain, old straightforward facts rather than flowery.

The magazine thing is really difficult, isn't it. I prefer the British magazines to the American ones overall, and they are quite expensive. A year's subscription is not reasonable for me. Either way, British or American, if you fall in love with something and want to order it, the shipping, handling etc costs can mount up very quickly. ( I remember some years ago someone here tossing at me when a floss exchange was proposed that I could get a few skeins of something or other from Herrschners, and having to explain that the shipping cost, before exchange rate, would be more than the cost of the items.) Ah well, like you, I have more charts (and kits!) than I will likely complete in this lifetime--and a good source to get those charts I can't live without despite that. Dawne
