Here in Canada, they are carried at Chapters/Indigo (where I work) and in Regina several independent newsstands carry them as well. So I am lucky and don't need to subscribe to get them--although I have to ration how many I buy. At the moment, I like Cross Stitcher, for its mix of contemporary and traditional, and have always liked Classic Stitches, because it includes various forms of needlework in each issue.

Wouldn't that be a more perfect world! But I imagine the cost of producing the majority of designs with both fabrics would be prohibitive. I think having more designs come out as charts would be good--then you can do what you like for fabric, with a little mathematics as needed.

Dyan *does* contribute by informing stitchers of free lessons, patterns, et al. You prefer to view it as advertising. Kathy no longer posts here and keeps us up to date on the latest usenet. She's an opera singer and we haven't heard from her in years! She use to maintain one of the most important sites on cross stitch (though it did include other embroidery) on the net and won awards. That was the heydey of Usenet.

I found our charter: NAME: rec.crafts.textiles.needlework CHARTER: This group will be for discussions about needlework, as defined by 'any form of decorative stitching done by hand'. Included will be all variations of stitchery: stamped embroidery, counted thread stitching, and canvas work, including needlepoint. Discussion might cover different kinds of canvases and fabric grounds, flosses, needles and other supplies, pattern design, marking, and finishing etc.

Anyway, advertising was always a bone of contention, but Kathy noted in the more informal "rules" that we would be kind to designers, shops, authors, etc., as long as the advertising wasn't blatant. That was a set up as a result of a consensus from thousands of users over many years. There is nothing blatant about Dyan's posts.

I said it was curmudgeons *like* you. I didn't accuse you explicitly. And that's the second time I've responded to that. Did you not read it the first time or were you so busy being angry you missed it?

Monica Ferris was the author I was referring to. Several people climbed all over her not long ago when she posted. I was ashamed at the behavior. The accusation was advertising her books in a shameless fashion. I haven't seen her post in a very long time.

By being hostile to our friends in the business, you drive them away. They can be extremely helpful to many stitchers. I ask you kindly not to do it. I can't force you to stop. I am simply asking you and telling you the consequences when that behavior persists.

I love "Classic Stitches" but can't find it regularly. I love "Stitch" from the Royal Guild, but only pick it up when I spot 3 or more things I want to do or learn more about.

I've just requested my library start getting Pieceworks - I know they have a magazine grant from a private donor right now. So maybe it will come.

So I see, it is not actually in the rules, or charter, as such. I might also point out that her charter was a guideline as this is an unmoderated usenet group. An unmoderated usenet group that permits advertising has forsale or marketplace in it's title.

I am not angry Dianne, how do you arrive at that conclusion ? Because you yourself are in an angry state ? The day usenet can make me angry I will tell you about it.

I liked Monica but there was a fundamental difference. She did not just post here when she had a new book out. She joined in various topics at all times, she asked many questions, even asked for suggestions as I recall about crewel ideas for one story. Then sure, she said when the book had gone to print. Ninety percent of her posts had nothing to do with getting people to buy her books.

See ? There you go with 'you' again, time to make up your mind Dianne and stop speaking with forked tongue. Who do you think you are speaking to ? Some recalcitrant child ? Well you have the wrong person here. For years you have bullied stitchers that your way is the only right way, whereas I feel you are not always right.

I wish all designs came just as charts. There would be no need for inferior floss. Even though the floss in that kit was rather nice. No like older kits and that JP coats floss. I just can't stand trying to match unmatchable floss. I usually change colors like my afghan fairies. I have tons of floss and probably could have changed to DMC or Anchor which is really nice to work with and I think the colors are brighter I don't know if brighter is really the right word. Just really nice and some are different so it gives more variety. Why have only 400+ colors when you can have 800+ LOL.!!! No to mention metallics which I love. Accentuate are a lot nicer than krenik. If you ever get the chance to try them. Donna D (Who used her son's computer)

Hi Dawne,

Sorry for getting the author wrong.

I actually love working from kits. I wouldn't buy it if the thread wasn't pre-sorted or was really awful quality but I too would buy kits especially if they have specialty threads.

Also when they would be a design that was not available as a pattern.

I just love stitching period. Anyway I can get it.

When I started stitching and visiting groups ( this being my primary group back then) I couldn't figure out why anyone in the world would buy more charts, threads, fabrics than they could stitch in 10 lifetimes.

That was BEFORE.

Now, I don't ask stupid questions. I AM one of those stitchers and one cannot put a value of knowing that whatever it is that you want to stitch is right there in your STASH.

You are one nasty lady. You complain when I only post to announce new releases and don't participate in the discussions. Then I start to participate and post , and NOT just this topic, and you are the first one to jump down my throat and make it out like I'm always angling for a sale.

Knock it off Lucretia. I don't care who's product stitchers buy, As long as they are happy stitching something!

I was trying to give stitchers my view on kits.

Stop trying to make it sound like I'm only here to try and advertise.

Most of you probably all know this already. Don't ever stitch a project page per page. IT WILL show. We have alot of stitchers that send us pictures of their finished works. Some of these have the obvious tell tale lines showing each page separation. Run your colors from one page into the next..

Cross-stitch Gold from the UK and there is an Australian magazine called Embroidery and Cross-stitch. They are just gorgeous. Lots of beautiful novel ways of finishing designs as well.

I was looking for a nice on-line link so you could see how cute, but the only stitched example I saw in a quick look was worked on very dark blue fabric, so the frogs didn't show up at all. I will use a light blue of some kind, and a really bright grass green for the frogs, so they will definitely show up.

You must think people are incredibly stupid !

Despite what Dianne says I recall it was deemed acceptable here when people such as you merely had a sig line, leaving it up to individuals whether they cared to visit that site.

Even Karen Campbell has been taken to task for having a sig line that was too long - and she is not selling stuff.

Could you be satisfied with doing that ?

It might be tiamary7711 and I might or might not have used a space. I just don't remember because it's been so long since I was able to access the site! Thanks & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I know the chart you asre talking about. I have the one with butterflies that I will do some day for DD. Anywhooo -- if the frogs were larger, they would be absolutely done in a variegated green so that they loiok sort of knobby or spotted like froggies really are. They are cute -- VERY cute indeed and the finished pieces -- all the square ones

-- are too! Photos when finished, please. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I remember that discussion the same as you. Everyone also agreed that a quick post when a new design was released was also acceptable. Lots of people get designer newsletters telling them when new designs are released but even more are not. A lot of us -- me included -- don't have easy access to a LNS to have the opportunity to see new designs. It helps to have designers post telling us a new design is released and what the theme of the design is -- a holiday design or kitties or doggies or beach stuff or garden, etc. If the post is short and basic, then it's not blatant advertising but simply passing along info that will be of interest to many. I know that Poetta from Ladybug Lane has done this. She would post something like "We have just released a new Redheaded Girl design for coffee lovers. You can see it at the link below". Something like that with a business link in the sig line is good enough. Technically I suppose it's advertising but it's not like the posts we sometimes see telling us that a certain business is the best source for something specific so we had all better go to the site and buy stuff!

No, I just think that you are incredibly mean. You obviously don't like me for some reason and I am fed up of your rudeness.

My signatture line is my name and my website address. Are you telling me that this is too long??? or inappropriate???

You know Lucretia, what I will be satisfied with is NOT participating in this group at all.

I won't even add my signature to this post in case it might not be Lucretia correct.

YOU are making this group an awful negative place to be. You are a very sad case.

I don't need all this negativity in my life.

Happy Stitching everyone! Dyan

You just know personal insults ?

Not if you stayed with just that, a sig line, but the bodies of your posts are full of 'we have this and that, we have a new this' which is advertising.

More insults, soooo constructive

I am ??
