Wounded Count is up to 60 , several of which hard wounded. mirjam

No, he`s not there now. I just fail to see your logic, Jim. I can`t see how the risks in Canada can be any different to what they are here, given the fact that you have such a diverse range of immigrants of all nationalities, faiths and political opinions.

I`m not wishing it on you, but it`s quite possible that you may, one day, get a nasty surprise. NO-ONE, NO where is free of that risk in the current world climate.

They always ask me at the border if I am carring any guns and I always say no. Judy

But who would want to bomb Canada anyway? They are such nice people in general. I always feel very safe there. Judy

Jim - I feel you're very naive too - to think that terrorists couldn't attack Canada is ridiculous - they're getting better and better at hiding ways to commit these horrendous acts. If you think hand guns can't be purchased very easily in Canada, you don't get out much - they are easily smuggled into the country. There was a program on tv shortly after 9/11 when all the security went sky-high especially at airports - and some reporter was STILL able to smuggle a gun aboard an airplane so easily that it was a joke. I don't know where that particular plane was headed, but it could've been Canada. Mirjam has seen the misery up front and personal concerning terrorists - I think she knows very much what she is talking about. I wish Canada had the 'security system' you're dreaming about, but I'm just not too bloody sure it does. Everybody wakes up after a disaster (at least for a while) - will we have to go thru something like that before we realize we are just as vulnerable as anyone else? Probably.

Everyone says no whether they have one or not - well, I shouldn't say everyone ... but swaying a bit from the terrorist thing, we had an absolutely horrible murder here in New Brunswick not long ago - the guy (Can. born but American citizen) who carried out these murders went thru the border with all kinds of arms - they were seized by US Customs - but the most horrible thing was - the chain saw that was used in the murders was covered with blood - and they let him enter the U.S. Huh? No, they weren't aware that murders had taken place here, but wouldn't a bloody chain saw kinda make you take a second look at this guy? He was eventually caught, thank heavens, and I hope he rots in hell. Like Pat and Mirjam have said - when there's a will, there's a way - just the audacity of this guy trying to go thru the border with the murder weapons shows you that this type of people can and will do what they bloody well please, no matter the consequences.

Maybe Judy ,,,, The same people who bombed the Twin Towers ? New york is a wonderful city as well... mirjam

Sharon , how horrid !!! they actually let him through with the Blood stained Chain saw ???? unbelievable ???? and who was murdered ? mirjam

It is easy to get angry at the states. It seems pointless to attack Canada. I am halfway kidding anyway. Judy

Let me come back to my original thesis. There is one group of people who *can* do something about suicide bombings in the UK at the moment. And that is the "tribal" leaders in the Muslim community. They need to go to the law enforcement authorities and ask them what they need to do to find all the potential "Al Qaeda" operatives in the UK. Only the law enforcement agencies with the complete cooperation of the leaders of the Muslim community, can succeed. So far, there is no sign that the leaders of the Muslim community in either the UK or Canada are anxious or willing to take this vital step. For the Muslim leaders to condemn the bombings in simply not enough; they need to *do* something, and there is absolutely no sign in the UK that they are willing to *do* anything. All the Muslim leaders are prepared to do is talk, and talk is cheap.

Last summer we returned to the US through the same border crossing. We were somewhat amazed the US Customs people didn't want to see any ID, or ask any questions. To my mind they were very lax; for all they knew we could have been forced to go through the border with someone holding a gun on us. You can't see into a big RV too easily from the ground level.

Gillian

I find it a little lax too at times - but they say these people are specially trained to weed out the 'baddies' - I don't know if they have psychic abilities or what, but I'm hoping they are good at what they're doing.

That murderer who did his nasty deed here in N.B. went thru that border too - they did seize his weapons but let him go thru - but a bloody chainsaw!!! My gawd, what do they want - a video of the murder!!! Makes no sense to me.

From what I read at the time, they wanted to hold him, but the murders had not yet been reported to the authorities, or at least to the Border Patrol, and they had no legal grounds to detain him longer than the three hours or so. Gut feeling was that he was a baddy, but nothing specific.

My 2 cents: Absolutely the Muslim leaders must "do" something - they must "put their money where their mouth is", not just in the UK or Canada but in the US as well. Our journalists need to interview them on TV and show their refusal to condemn over and over like they show the results of the bombings. Debating these issues in a newsgroup is interesting and informative reading, but showing the world via TV how the Muslim communities really feel would be interesting and informative as well!!!

Please forgive my for pointing this out, but you seem to be saying two completely different things. You say Muslim leaders must *do* something, but all you seem to require in interviews with journalists is that they "condemn" the bombings. Words are cheap; condemnation is not actually

*doing* anything. What we need to remember is that the culture which comes from a belief in Islam, is a macho, male chauvenistic pig culture; where women have absolutely no status, and are merely the chattels of the male members of their family, be that father, brother, husband, cousin etc. As I have remarked before the cry of this culture is "I and my brothers against my cousins; I and my cousins against the world". In other words, it is absolutely contrary to the Muslim culture to solicit outside help to solve their problems. It is going to be *extremely* easy for any Muslim leader in western democracies to condemn the bombings. Yasser Arafat, towards the end of his life, did this routinely. But the only thing he actually *did* was to encourage more bombings. It is going to be *extremely* difficult for any Muslim leader to actually do anything. It might prove to be something close to impossible for any Muslim to be a whistle blower on one of his kin, to an outside agency. When your journalists interview your Muslim leaders it is *not* enough to ask for condemnations; they should demand deeds, not words.

You`ve gone slightly off at a tangent, Jim. A suicide bomber, once his mind is made up, will go ahead no matter who says ANYTHING to him. Only the "good" Muslim leaders will tell him not to do it - unfortunately there are Muslim leaders who spout hatred and Jihad. Law enforcement can do very little against this, unless it is said openly - in which case they can make arrests. So you end up with an underground culture, much like the Spy rings (which, although you said we weren`t talking about spies, are very relevant in their similarity and treachery).

In view of the fact that the law has never actually rescinded the death penalty for treason, it`s a pity we don`t make use of it.
