OT: Weather

I can totally understand that. My office in grad school was at a far corner of campus from the Student Ctr - and the comp sci building (where in the old days we had to go pick up big runs of output from the mainframe). And my parking pass was for an outdoor lot at the union - big mistake. However - there was a connection via the basements, etc and a steam tunnel - of the old buildings. I think when any of us popped up - somehow the undergrads could always tell the grad student look. But, the last "covered" connection ended across the quad from the student union, and kind of next building from comp sci. At least you had layers!

Yup. Summers here are much worse than Fla - no ocean breeze. But, we've moved west about 20 miles, and with the slightly added elevation, it's a noticeable difference. Where we are now - there seems to be much more of a perpetual wind - gentle at times. DH now refers to this as the "Loudoun Breeze" And it's true - in the summer - once the patio/deck were done - we'd go outside -even on a really hot afternoon and especially in the evening - and there was a cool breeze. Last night - he came home from hockey at about midnight, and about 10 min later came up to get me, take me downstairs "put on your clogs" , put his jacket on me - shut all the lights in the house (we don't have the blinds up in the higher part of the family room w/ 20' ceiling) - and out to the deck. All the while saying "it's a good thing." We walk out - and it's pretty light as it's almost a full moon, and the drizzle had stopped - "look up - the Milky Way...that's why I love that we moved to Loudoun" ... And he's right - the whole sky was glowing - we could actually see constellations. To those of you out in MN, SD, the heartlands - this seems like no big deal. But, for people who live near cities - it is. So, it was really nice - and not too cold at all - maybe 45 F.

Watch the DVD for "Mystery, Alaska" - and aside from laughing at the few times when Russell Crowe does his own skating instead of his double it's kind of a fun movie to watch. I think filmed in BC or AB (don't remember for sure( even though it's supposed to be Alaska. But - they have several shots of the town - and people are skating on the sidewalks - it's great.

I'll never forget the first time we traveled in the "upper layer" of states! Miniture stop and yield signs in the ditches for those snowbmoilers! In the summer they sure looked strange...

I'm sorry you're not here now, Lucille. After that rainy night Saturday and again today are clear and crisp, 40s weather. Perfect for tourists and shopping! We had a holiday treat, we went to the Grand Central Christmas shopping (they set up booths in part of the station) and had lunch at the Oyster Bar. Yum!

I know what you mean. One of my favorite things about living out in the sticks is that none of our immediate neighbors have those annoying dusk to dawn streetlights so if we turn off the lights in our house & go outside after dark, it is DARK and we can see every star in the sky. Not only is it amazingly beautiful, but absolutely quiet, too, since Humbug is a quiet enough road (and about 1/2 mile away) that there is virtually no road noise. It is a great change from that condo in San Jose with a neighbor's car alarm beeping when he got home at 3 am, along with radio, TV and plain old close living sounds from the surrounding families.

Last night when I got home just before midnight, it was around 30 F, with enough moisture in the air that the driveway glittered in the full moon and the "extra" car glittered as if it were covered in diamonds. :-)) Amazing how those cheap, simple, natural pleasures can make a person feel so good. :-))) Liz from Humbug
