OT: Wedding report (for Jim).

The TV, at least, is trying to soften us up! At this moment (about three hours before the wedding) they were telling us about the cheering "crowds" - which they later admitted were "about two or three hundred"!!! (How impressive) They were singing Welsh Rugby songs last time I looked. People are walking up and down the pavements quite easily, anyway.

Today`s "Sun" newspaper (You`ll know that one, Jim, as the favourite rag of the working masses) has no reference to today`s wedding on the front page - they`re featuring the Pope`s funeral. In fact most of the newspapers are fairly subdued about it the wedding.

Personally, I feel that you can`t judge by the attitude of either papers or tv to judge the climate of opinion. You can only judge the reaction of friends and acquaintances, who have absolutely no axe to grind. Everyone I`ve spoken to on the subject is either strongly "anti" or, at the best, indifferent.

What impression is your sister getting in her part of the country, Jim? I`m in East Anglia - I can`t remember where your sister is.

There`s another interesting point. For once I almost feel sorry for Charles, as he was put in a very awkward position at the funeral, sitting almost next to Mugabe. What to do when it came to the part where everyone had to shake hands in peace with their nearest neighbours! He looked a bit bewildered, and then shook hands with Mugabe. Some think that he should have made a point and refused - others that since it was a religious service he really had to comply. I can`t make my mind up about that one. Possibly not an occasion for scoring points but, on the other hand ..... one thing`s for certain, he`s going to be wrong whatever he does!

I thought of going down the town later to see if the shops were as crowded as they usually are on a Saturday - but then the Grand National is on immediately after the wedding, so it wouldn`t really be a fair indication!

They weren`t too crowded yesterday (Friday), which they usually are if there`s an important event on Saturday. (You know the British "Siege" mentality. "Stock up just in case!!!")

Thanks Pat. Unfortunately, my sister, who lives in Bridgwater, Somerset, is a *very* pro-royalist. I doubt I will get an unbiased answer from her on this subject.

I assume Jim must not have access to television. CBC Newsworld is covering the event - they are hardly biased, they have just been showing the Mugabe handshake, talking about polls both here, and in the UK re. Camilla, the wedding etc. They are certainly not cosseting the Royal Family.

I'm trying to figure why he needs a blow by blow account from elsewhere.

And you think Pat is unbiased rotflmaopmp !

I don`t think he asked for a blow by blow account, Sheena, but a sense of the OPINIONS from elsewhere. He obviously already knows what the opinions are in Canada! Did you just get up, or something?

Being biased doesn`t mean I can`t read the climate of opinion. I may or may not share it, but I can still read it and report on it more honestly than the media do.

Absolutely!!!!! As to Canadian broadcasts, from what I could see (CBC and CTV) the "color" commentators were both pro-royalists. I really dont think either network would want to put any spin on the affair, other than happy thoughts, while it was going on.

I was just reading the article from Reuters on Yahoo news (I'm in the U.S.) and I think this says everything I need to know:

"That was to be followed by a reception for 800 guests, ranging from American comedienne Joan Rivers to TV host David Frost, before Charles and Camilla fly off to Scotland for their honeymoon."

Joan Rivers! hahahahaha I want to hear her take on this! ;-)

It`s really funny, Jim, they`re all happy-happy as far as tv and radio are concerned - a COMPLETE switch from only yesterday when they were still sneering and cracking jokes! Talk about fickle! Probably dawning on them that they might be jeopardising their chance of future knighthoods if Charles actually DOES come to the throne!

What really bugs me is the way they`re painting the couple as faithful long - term lovers - even saying how Camilla "helped Charles through his failing marriage" and completely ignoring the fact that she was the cause of it`s failure before it even started! Talk about selective memory.

Those people who say that Kings/Princes have always had a wife and a mistress and the wife had always put up with it can`t get it into their heads that Diana was a very modern woman - and modern women just DON`T put up with it!

I had to smile when the tv reporter said, with some apparent surprise "Well, no-one`s BOOING!"

The crowds did thicken up a bit and were fairly quietly cheering (Prince William got the loudest cheer). Mind you, naturally one can assume that the people present were supporters - (since they didn`t Boo!)it`s the ones who DIDN`T show up that one wonders about.

It was very noticeable that when the Queen finally came out on the steps of St. George`s Chapel (I love that place) She said not a word to anyone and appeared to be looked all round, up and down, behind her - anywhere but at Camilla - then she shot off after a few minutes - to watch the Grand National, they said. LOL.

Apropos of which - the only woman jockey (Carrie Ford) did wonderfully well and came in fifth from a field of forty, completely flabbergasting those who said that a woman had no chance of winning - not enough stamina! As she said, it was a doddle compared with giving birth! It would be great see her win next year, perhaps. It was an excellent race this year, and every horse that fell appeared to gallop off unscathed, thank goodness.

So that`s TWO things I watched today that I`d told everyone I wasn`t going to! Oh well.

We`ll see what the papers say in the morning.

Good Lord - I didn`t know that SHE was there - I certainly didn`t see her. It`s a wonder they didn`t have Ruby Wax and Jerry Springer as well! The mind boggles!

And what on EARTH was Zara Phillips wearing - looked like a badly done crazy quilt - something from the ragbag at any rate. T.P.T. looked gorgeous - but must have been cold!

Tara Palmer Tompkinson. High class ex-drug addict - pretty girl, definitely a bit nuts, but very likeable when she`s not being irritating. Hyperactive, I`d say. She wore a sleeveless dress with one of those tiny hats ith lots of feathers sticking up.

Didn`t catch sight of the "Beard" - what was she wearing?

Rowan Williams makes a very impressive looking and sounding archbishop, doesn`t he. Pity he`s such a prat.

It was horrible - sort of a black and white colour block dress - most unattractive. Princess Diana sure spruced up the British when it comes to fashion - what a bunch of gorgeous outfits going to that wedding today!!! The first outfit Camilla had on was gorgeous, but that second one didn't do a thing for her in my opinion, very dowdy.

Actually, I thought they both looked great; you have to bear in mind that she is mo "teeny bopper" but a mature woman. The second "hat" was not designed for the wind, and to my mind it was a take-off for a tiara. As you all know I am very pro-royal, and I think it is so cool that they could pull off that marriage the way they did.

DH and I married after 13 years of "living together", and we made it very simple too. None of the family knew until after the event, and two close couples were with us at the Registrar's "wedding room". Plastic flower decor was a bit tacky, but she made it an excellent ceremony. My flowers were real.

I hope Charles and Camilla can enjoy the rest of their lives without the shadow of Diana, the ghostly nincompoop.

Mostly uninterested and totally ambivalent American here:

Loved Camilla's hat. Haven't seen that many fabulous hats outside a southern black church.

I thought the most resounding statement was made by the Queen herself--when she stepped away from Charles and Camilla when reporters started taking pictures.

I didn't watch, just looked at a bit of them going to the Guildhall. Could it be the Queen stepped away to just leave the main participants in the pictures ? It's the sort of thing she does on those occasions so as not to eclipse the two most involved.

Anyway, someone asked this question, and not having watched it, I wondered if someone here knows the answer.

" I was wondering ,,, there was a lady with dark hair and no hat that sang just prior to the blessing of the rings...

I could have sworn that she was singing in Russian or something similar????

I first thought it was Italian but then it seemed to be "guttural"...... like German ....... but it wasn't German....

Anyone recognize the language? "

Anyone here catch that part ? TIA

I will confess to liking both her outfits (and hats, although I`m NOT a hat person!)

That was definitely cringe-making. And the contrition SOOOooo convincing - NOT!
