What stitching would you take to a desert island?--on topic

Not a bad idea, but being a HAM operator myself ( albeit not over-enthusiastic, unlike DH) I would have some sort of radio, solar powered ,and wire to build a simple antenna, so we could order replaceement supplies!! Can't run out of wine and chocolate!

Unfortunately, I have several good friends whose houses were, indeed, ruined by Hurricane Katrina. (Twelve feet of water in a one-story house will do that!!) Most of them are ok with having to buy all new furniture, clothing etc., what really hurts is the family heirlooms. Old photographs. Family letters from decades ago. Souvenirs of various kinds. The other problem, of course, is finding a roof over their heads. One friend was lucky, she evacuated to stay with a friend in Baton Rouge and ended up staying there for several months as her job moved there temporarily, then she got a FEMA trailer in N.O. and, presently, purely because her DH had gone back to school before the storm to study for a second PhD, they are in a cramped student apartment - but at least it is an affordable roof over their heads.

Another friend who lost a two-story house (but the water was four feet deep on the second floor) is now living with extended family. They had evacuated to Texas, then her son came back and bought a six-bedroom house across Lake Pontchartrain into which they moved: son, his wife, their two pre-teen children, his mother (my friend) his cousin, her husband and baby, his grandfather...........Owners previously of four houses, now crammed into one.

Because we have had a number of storm warnings in the last few years, I KNOW what I take. Cash, checkbook and credit cards. The box containing all the family papers. Old photographs. All medications, plus prescription numbers. Two blankets in case we have to sleep in the car, and two air mattresses in case we have to sleep on a floor somewhere. Two changes of clothes, with, if possible, one set of business attire. My knitting basket and my embroidery basket, my current book (two if possible). Food and water in case there is none available on the road.

Most of the above I could pull together in ten or fifteen minutes. If I had more notice, I might also take a sewing machine, sewing tools and fabric in case I ended up in a hotel room with nothing to do,

Gillian , why do you assume that Being realistic , and answering truthfully , what i did take when i had the 4 minute warning , is Not understanding the Game !!!!! The only difference is that when it happened to me [ and to others like me it wasn`t a Game , it was flight for life ,,,, I think the problem isn`t about Nuances in Language , but Nuances in Life skills. mirjam

One of the first things I was given when I moved to California was my aunt's Evacuation List -- she's regularly evacuated for wildfires, and, of course, Californians live with the daily threat of earthquakes.

Like Olwyn Mary, I added to her list my WIP, as well as a couple OOP charts that I would not be able to replace at a reasonable price. I could assemble all of the stuff in the list in a matter of minutes. The day there was a wildfire a mile from our house, we first packed what was on my aunt's list, and then started packing the extras (the computer, some favored records/tapes, etc.) while waiting for the evacuation order.

Yes, it is. I've been a bit PDQ Bach fan since my first live show in

1972, and I was fortunate to see him again live just last spring! They were recording an album for release in Nov. 2007. (Reminder to self: See if the album's out!)

X-No-Archive:

I would take....a hint.

I thought newsgroups were supposed to be fun? A diversion from all the very real problems we all deal with in our own day to day lives, and the often more serious problems a lot of us are aware exist, even if we are not directly touched by them ourselves.

And Mirjam, why don't you dig out a dictionary and figure out what hypothetical means.

Arnhild

She doesn't have to find a dictionary. She knows every nuance of English. It is those of us who are native speakers of English who have to learn to use the language correctly. This has been debated at length in the past.

Arnhild i think the Name of this Ng is Tottaly hypothetical ,,, it was suoposed to speak about Needlework ? wasn`t it ? mirjam

Poor Arnhild, you walked right into that one lol

Well, gee, the original question WAS related to needlework. It basically meant, if you were limited to the amount of needlework supplies you could have, and all other things being equal and provided for, what would you take? It assumes you have water, food and shelter, just no access to more needlework supplies.

We ALL realize what a terribly hard life you've had, what trials and tribulations you have been through. We ALL know that you would provide for other things as well. This is more a "if I won the lottery and had all the time in the world to stitch, but limited space, what would I bring?"

Geez, Mirjam, lighten up. Not everything is aimed at insulting you. And further, if you can't get with the program, get off it.

Apologies folks, for starting this idiocy yesterday with Mirjam. I try not to respond to her, but for once I made an honest remark to her eregarding her lack of understanding nuances.

Ppppbbblllfffttt! Gill, we've all been sucked in at least once. It doesn't help to harbour any nice feelings toward Mirjam one way or another: she'll take it the wrong way every time! FWIS, all you can do is vent once in a while and then subside back again into impassivity.

So you can't have the thirty lashes: you haven't earned them! ;->

Sweetie, you have been off group for a while; periodically, like a volcano, I have an eruption with said woman, and then subside back to courteous simmering!

It is a shame, but such is life!

Yes Linda , and was true to the `game` rules when i wrote that i would prffesr to have sewing threads and thin cloth ,, as far as i know sewing thread and repairing are done by threads and needles ,,, =3Dneedlework of some kind .... and i joined with curiousity , and giving another side ,, i didn`t see anything as insults , just as another side of looking at things , which USUALLY is also an intended part of these sort of games ....i think you were insulted because i wondered why you would want to take books with needlework ideas to an Island that sure would have loads of interesting Natural views !!!! And ps this is a public unmoderated group , if you can`t accept that ,,,, maybe you should enclose yourself in a moderated group , where you can throw out everyone who doesn`t OBEY to your rules ... mirjam

Yes, that's why the question was what NEEDLEWORK would you take to a deserted island if you knew your basic needs would be taken care of. Or did you miss that?

I don't know if Linda was insulted or not, but I did think that your comment was insulting. Some people prefer to work from patterns rather than design their own or to take inspiration from books and you implied that there was something wrong with not drawing inspriration from the island itself. Everyone has different ways of expressing their creativity. Questioning why someone would not express themselves the same way you express yourself is insulting, in my opinion.

And i answered that i will take sewing threads, becuase i use them both for craft /repairing and for art projects ,,,,in fact i use as much sewing threads in my embroidery than embroidery threads ,, And even if all your NEEDS are provided , i will still want my special colors that i use to make the colors of embroidery threads some hues. mirjam

Elizabeth i was just curious , why aperson going to an island [ and knowing it before hand as the game rules imply] would need Books with pictures , it is a tottal normal and realistic , or for that game Hypothetical question,,,, no offence meant , no insult meant, just plain human curiousity ...This is after all as YOU ALL tell me a Hypothetical question , thus i want to learn from it , or enjoy the Understanding WHY other people take Other things ??? thus this was a very reasonable question to ask ,, It is You and others who imply that i am offended or insulted by your posts. I am not , i am curious.... mirjam
