Back into NG

Finally! After not being able to access you wonderful people through my Outlook Express for a month because one of my neighbors was using my wireless connection and used all my download space, I am back. DH bought a firewall so we are protected. Would you believe in one month there were 5133 new messages! I will never be able to read them all and have a life, but I will scan all the subjects.

Boy do I feel good again!

BTW, my surgery is over and I go to PT 3 times a week on my knee. I am doing very well and look forward to being normal once again, although my DH says I was never NORMAL. LOL

Anyway - hugs to all you friends out there.

So glad to hear you are well on all sorts of levels!

One suggestion about your computer security, if you are using a wireless network, make sure your internet connection is encrypted. That way, even if outsiders saw your wireless network when they scanned for access points, they could not get in without the password. The firewall will protect your computer from intruders, but your wireless signal needs its own protection as well. You can encrypt it by using the software that came with your router, in most cases. You may see it referred to as "WEP".

Take care and stay well!

To back Alice's suggestion up...

A firewall means that your computers are protected from direct attack, not your wireless router.

If you do not want to follow Alice's suggestion, you should at least setup a MAC filter on the wireless router. Only systems with MAC addresses ( kind of like a computer fingerprint) that appear in your list on the router can access the router, which is a little easier to keep secure, but just as secure as the WEP settings.

Without security on the router, your slimy neighbor can still [borrow] your connection.

Welcome back, Jan! How in the world did you discover that your neighbor was using your wireless connection? I'll bet s/he is frustrated now.

Good to see you Jan. You're sounding pretty chipper, so that's good. Good luck with the physio. work on your knee. . In message , Boca Jan writes

We're glad you're home. We left the light on for you. I watch the group rather closely and have yet to accuse any of us of being normal. Polly

Talked to DH and he set up a MAC filter. So far it is working well.
