Cherrywood Fabrics

Ok, so I'm watching QuiltersTV episodes that my TiVo is so kindly downloading for me and I see these luscious fabrics from Cherrywood Fabrics. The gradations look wonderful and I found a grouping, chestnut to light, that are exactly what I have been dreaming of! I was beginning to think I was going to have to learn how to dye fabric to get this type of coloration group - and here it is, already made for me!!!

I know it's a bit more expensive, but might be worth it for the colors. Has anyone had experience with this company? Any ordering issues? Is the fabric just right?

Curious minds want to know!

I bought a Cherrywood sampler about 5 years ago at the Houston show - it was pastels, and I used it to make a baby quilt in the Boston Commons pattern. The outside was all white on white, and I used the Cherrywood fabric on the "commons".

The fabric is fantastic - lovely weight, the colors are just incredible. I guess they end up being about 50% more than commercially dyed fabrics, but for something special (like this baby quilt was) it's worth it. It really is a high quality product.

I also got one of their "grab bags" at the show - that was big fun, I've used pieces and parts from that for years.

It's even better in person! It looks like a suede, the colors are deep, rich and extremely satisfying. I think if you tried to dye your own fabric to this depth, you'd soon be willing to pay their prices. Unless you truly want to play with dyes, and rinsing and rinsing and rinsing.....don't reinvent the wheel. Can you tell I'm a big fan?? I love their grab bags too...especially good for paper piecing small designs.

Just an FYI...

Marcus Brothers has a new line of fabrics called Sahara in around 40+ different colors. They look just like Cherrywoods, not as heavy, more like regular quilting fabric, but the colors are stunning. They wash really well. I've put them next to my Cherrywoods and they can easily be used together in the same quilt.

And they sell for around $8.25/yard.

I'm currently using them for a Rhapsody quilt. While I'd love to use Cherrywoods ($13.50/yard) or Ricky Tims' hand-dyed fabric ($25/yard), the Sahara fabric works out to be a great deal.

You can see the full collection of colors at Marcus Brothers:

Can't comment on sending for them; but I bought some when I came over to Paducah. They have had their project in mind for several years, but this year it will at least be drawn. If it works, it will be wonderful >ggg< The fabric is gorgeous. The deep peacock blue I have makes me shiver! . In message , Dannielle writes

All of you are giving such great reviews that I think I am going to have to request these for my birthday this year! Or maybe Mother's Day, since it comes before my b-day. Or maybe .... nah, I just bought a house (and have had multiple high-cost issues to deal with on it) so I have to be on a fabric diet for a short amount of time!

What else is everyone hiding that I need to know about? (I told you, I can't sew for a few weeks - so I'm net dream shopping!)

Dannielle: Cherrywood IS delightful. I would not request it for a gift. It is very special and expensive enough that you should plan to select it yourself. You will want to at least have an idea of what you want to make, how much you need, and what color range you best like. Good luck in your new house! PAT in VA/USA

Pat,

The first thing I learned with my husband is to tell him exactly what I want for each holiday, or just order the stuff myself so I get the right thing! That's why I have loved holidays ever since I began quilting! I simply order, tell him that I am spending X number of dollars on my birthday/anniversary/Christmas present and he says "Ok dear!"

Heck, I called him one day, told him I was in love and it was only going to cost him $1300. Had my Bernina the next day! :-) Got to love him - and no, he's not for sale.....yet.

I'm working on a miniature star quilt with Cherrywood fabric right now. I love LOVE this stuff. Easy to work with.

The company was great as far as ordering. I got a grab bag of all different colors. 50 pieces, 6"X9", almost 2 yards total - $20.

I save even the tiniest scraps.

It's definitely worth the $$. If you're thinking of dyeing your own, it'll cost you lots more to buy the supplies and learn by trial and error to get the kind of subtle gradations Cherrywood has perfected.

I had considered that as well. What I really want to do on my own is fabric painting, not dyeing. I think I am going to take the plunge soon and order these luscious fabs.
