Curiosity question--do you live in northern or southern Germany. I ask because I have a pen friend (acquired during my high school German class many years ago) who lives in near Bremen. Granted, my German is very limited, and I found her hard to understand sometimes. However, I met a woman in the last few years who grew up in southern Germany. I found her much easier to understand. When I asked her about it, she said that people in the north had a decidedly different accent, kind of like people from the Bronx. ;-) Just wondered if you'd noticed this?

Every region of Germany has a distinct accent, at least to other Germans. Wonderful Rita is from the north and insists that Germans there speak a "purer" German. DH (a German) can go on about it at length. We live in the south, and he comes from the south too. He says that northerners with their local dialects closer to Dutch (Platdeutsch) had to learn to speak "proper" German, so they speak it
