I always believed duvet = comforter. The duvet cover/comforter cover is what goes over the plain duvet. It makes it look prettier and is easy to wash.

I have been following this thread and now I have to add my two cents.
My Aunt had what she called a feather bed, he bed always looked very lumpy. They slept on one and under a second. I've heard that the one that you sleep on top of the regular mattress and is covered by a sheet, the top one has a pillow case type cover.
Then I got married, his Polish Grandmother gave us a "feather thick", their name for it, it weighed a ton. I found out that the stuffing was made of duck feathers, the feathers were stripped off of the quill and saved until there was enough for a "feather thick" or pillow. They made a type of duck soup that started with a live duck, that's why they had duck feathers. It's called chi-nee-nah, and no I never ate it but I did contribute several ducks when we had the farm. That was a whole lifetime ago, and husband has been an EX for almost 20 years.
