The train goes directly to L'Enfant Plaza, and runs as far out as Manassas and Fredericksburg. I used to take it when I worked in Alexandria (smocked DD's Easter dress on the train that year).

We have considered that as well, but DH doesn't want to commute too far as it takes away time from DD (now a whopping 17 months old). Are there any areas that aren't horridly overpriced yet are safe and secure there too? I am totally not familiar with the area and am afraid that I am not going to be able to go down and look at places before I have to be moved out of here.
