New pictures.

Well, I got my Hoffman Challenge entries off and they have been received. Did both a quilt and a handbag. DH really likes them, but he is prejudiced. Of course the few others who saw them also liked them so we shall see how it goes.

Also did a miniature and a bag for the Robert Kaufman challenge. Pictures of all can be seen in the 2008 challenges album at:

Now to finish a quilt for the Kaufman Batik Remix challenge. It's pieced and layered, just needs quilting/binding and photos done.

Joan, that quilt (in the Quilt show 2008 album) was made by one of the members of PAQA. She has been going through a rough patch with an extremely aggressive bout of breast cancer. But that is a wonderful, fun quilt.

Thanks, Pati

Sometimes I'm so dumb I wonder when my adult supervision will arrive and take care of me. I wondered why you put the peacock outside the window upside down. Took a while for me to realize that the peacock was fine and that the quilt was upside down. Ahhhh. Better. Now I want to get closer. I want to peer into the bags myself - they just look wonderful; and I really want to get my eyes up close to the mini. Ah. Exquisite. Thanks for sharing, Pati. Polly

Lovely stuff, Pati! I really like that Kaufman fabric you used in the bag! :) Your fussy cut flap makes the bag very special.

Polly, the quilt is right side up. The peacock is positioned in an unusual fashion. Sort of in a spiral. The center of the quilt is a "panel" cut from the fabric. It is then cut into the "star block" pieces and sewn back together with the goldy brown. Seams in that area are one eighth inch, the finished brown "leading" is a quarter inch finished (cut at 1/2" )

Glad you like them.

They are all wonderful. I particullarly like the bags. The fan shaped flip over top is great. They look like they have zips. I wish I knew when/how to sew in a zip.Well done and good luck with the challenge Pati.

Lovely collection, Pati. Well done you. I really like them all, but I specially love the way you have made the semi-circular 'flap' for the Hoffman handbag - gorgeous, and a great idea. . In message , Pati C. writes

Just one tip, Estelle - try to put the zip in before you start assembling any of the other pieces. For instance, in a cushion, put the zip wherever it is supposed to go before joining any other seams. By the way, I put cushion zips in the centre of the back, rather than mess up the neatness of the sides. If it is going across the top of a bag, that could be more tricky. I could try to show you next time you come to Malvern (if we both remember >g

Estelle, there are no zippers in these two bags. Just flaps with fusible Velcro. Thanks for looking. As for easy to install zippers in bags, try any of the Lazy Girls zippered bags. Very easy zippers and great instructions.

I love all your pieces Pati. How in the heck do you get so much done?

LOL I keep thinking that I should get off the computer and get stuff done. When I get started I go. And seem to have an affinity for anything related to fabric. Remember, no kids, no full time job, and no schedule to speak of. Just the classes that I teach, and my guild meetings. Need to go get ready to teach a New York Beauty class right now. Have all the printouts done, just need to get showered, dressed and finish gathering supplies.

Lovely, lovely projects, Pati. The Hoffman Challenge quilt is exquisite. I love the swirling blocks in the border, and am very partial to those colors.

As others have said, putting zippers in bags is really pretty easy if you can put them in before completely assembling the bag. I like to use an exposed zipper in bags. I put the zipper face down along the edge of the right side of one piece, stitch close to the zipper with a zipper foot, fold the seam to the wrong side, and top stitch the zipper down. Repeat for the other side of the zipper. Here's a link to a page with all types of zipper applications. Look for the section on "Exposed Separating Zipper". You don't need to use a separating zipper for this type of application, though it is sometimes easier. You can buy it slightly longer than you need, zip it shut, bar tack across the end where you want it, and cut it off below the bar tack.

Here's the link I meant to include. I messed up the copy/paste of the link in the original message. Sorry about that.
