OT: Back at home with a new hip

I'm groggy, spacey, tired and sore, but I'm HOME. And my boys set up everything - commode, downstaird bedroom - and rearranged things (moved the LR table out of the way along with all the chairs) and even made a few things from scratch (exercise tools) so I can get around the house to do my walks and and all my exercises. The dogs and birds were very happy to see me, and I them! It's good to be home and on the mend.

Oh my! I've never heard of a hip replacement being an in-and-out surgery. Wow! Be kind to yourself and don't overdo and keep the leg elevated when you can and work hard at your PT- it's soooooo important. And remember it's much easier to prevent pain than chase it if you wait too long for your meds. There's nothing wrong in using them judiciously and you won't become dependent on them with this short term use.

I'm glad you're doing so well. Keep it up! Woohoo!!!

Glad to hear that it went well. Be sure to do the therapy religiously. My teacher friend did on her knee fix and Mom on her knee replacement. They were both a month ahead of schedule and doing great with minimal pain. Gains now pay off big in the future. Agree on the pain meds, judicious preventive use is so much better.

Glad you're home as well. So much more comfortable and restful.

I was vastly surprised to see this message - home already?! but I'm so glad you're OK. Now, another hill of recovery to climb, but you know the pathways. I hope it will all be trouble free and that you'll be dancing around with the birds in a few weeks. Thanks so much for letting us know. . In message , IMS@?.?.invalid writes

Hi Leslie,

The medical facility I went to for the hip replacement has a program called 'joint camp' -- they had me starting the exercses 6 weeks prior to the surgery to strengthen my hip, thigh and knee muscles which have been out of wack for years due to the hip problems. These same exercises are also a part of the pt regimine they start the patient on day after surgery (yes the next day -- 2x per day while in the hospital--it was brutal-they even got you climbing stairs!!) and which I must follow for the next couple of weeks only 3x per day now that I am home. My DH is the best coach in the world and I'm already seeing an improvement. This afternoon I was able to 'schooch' out of the 1st floor bed unassisted (but under a watchful eye), get to the walker, and get to the bathroom on my own. And, last night, I went up the stairts to the bedroom and got to sleep in my own bed (again under a very watchful eye)....it was heaven.

This facility is also the same one I went to for my cancer treatments last year....they took such good care of me then, and they are so very organized and empathetic, and with the option to convelesce at home after the hip surgery it seemed like the perfect solution. Plus I had heard such good things about 'joint camp' from folks who had gone through it already.

I feel very blessed and fortunate to finally be on 'this side' of the hip issue and have a very supportive family and friends to help me get through it!

That's a great way to do it- starting PT before the surgery. I'm very happy that you have such a wonderful support team at home, too, as well as at the hospital. That makes all the difference. May your recovery continue as successfully and congrats on making the bathroom and stairs! WOOHOO!
