OT - sewn booties

This isn't about booties but one of the things I always tucked into gifts given to new Mammas is a baby hot water bottle. You can find these in most all large drug stores. Very soothing to tuck against little backs and tummies. I make a few nice terry cloth covers for them out of a thick bath towel. I've always gotten very positive feed back after the baby has arrived that they are so handy to have around.

My son, who is now almost 40, still has his. He uses it on the side of his neck when things start to kink after a long commute home. He actually slept with it until he was about eight years old. It became a ritual to fill 'er up with warm water, drop it in the terry bag and snuggle it to sleep...that with Fuff the Wonder Dog......Fuff became so ratty it looked more like something you'd cleaned out of the shower drain......he still has that too, Fuff has a place of honor on the shelf with his cross country track trophies.

Just a thought, Val

I'd like to make some of those, Polly. But where do you buy the rubber backed flannel? Jo-ann's?

Maybe Jeanne can locate it for you. It seems that I hunted a very long time and finally located some under a search that began with bedding, mattress pads. I just bought a double bed size and cut it as needed.

They do have that at JoAnn's, or at least the did a few years back (I believe). A family member made DS#1 a cradle and my mom made the mattress to go in it. She just got some dense foam cut to size, and then made sheets to fit and also cut a couple of these to fit. I think she said she found it at JoAnns. You can also purchase things like that already. I don't know where I got them (probably my mom too), but I had something similar that had surged edges that was a pre-done thing. We used those alot once they got older for changes on the floor rather than lifting them to the changing table in addition to a travel changing pad.

(15" wide, sold by the yard) fabric index there looks huge too, tho not sure what weight/type they all are.

this one appears smaller than the others, from my quick scan on those links. double check size vs price on all these +/- the shipping, of course. some look cheaper but may not be. i didnt make comparisons, i just find'em, lol. Ms Polly is keeping me busy online. leftover scraps could be used in a baby book or a play mat of different textures. also good for old folks or those with bad eyesight for the feeling. hope that helps someone, jeanne

I want to thank you all for finding some great patterns. I will be sure to post anything I create for that munchkin.

Try medical supply, the kind of place where you rent/buy hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers, commodes and such to use in your home. They have rubber pads with flannel on both sides made the same way as store bought puddle pads. Actually I think it's a little better quality. I happened to find this out years back when I was commenting on the price of this stuff at JoAnn's. A lady shopping there leaned over and whispered, "Go to Care Medical Supply on Stoneway and you can get a twin mattress sized piece for the same price as a narrow half a yard of that here." I did and she was right. Granted it was plain gray but you are going to make a cover for it anyway. If you don't have a medical supply place near you try looking at those places on the internet.

I'm always willing to get out of the way when there's incredible skill around. Jeanne, you're just terrific. Polly

You're so right, Val. That stuff can be expensive. If the gray is a good weight and costs less, it doesn't matter if you're going to make a 'sort of' sham to cover it anyway. We learned to love the rubber backed flannel when we were camping with teenagers - wet towels, bathing suits and sandy flip flops - ah me. Precious memories? Polly

I just put some dotted bumpy PJ feet fabric in the Goodwill bag since I have no intentions to make PJs ever again. I actually bought it for slippers.

The first person to email me gets it! donarden at gmail dot com

I've been clearing out some of the 'junk' in my sewing room. Just hauled two boxes of quilting books and magazines to the Youth Ranch Store. Have another box full and ready to go next trip to town.

lynn aka quilter asked about it in the first place. she'd probly like it. i think she is in the directory. Lynn lives in MA, near/in Boston. brain too foggy now to find it, i'm sure you can tho. jeanne

If anyone "Downunder" wants just a bit of this stuff to make one or two pairs of slippers let me know. I got a bulk lot for a class and have some over. Happy to send out "local" rather than you having to buy a minimum amount and pay air mail!

Don't sell yourself short, Jeanne. The trick to a successful "google" is to select the right search words. Lots of times it's easy to know what to look for, but not always.

Well, if anyone wants to try out any of these patterns, just do up a sample or two and I'll let you know how it works in 6 months or so. ;)
