Modular Knitting

Have a few questions about the recent discussion.

Just completed my first entrelac pattern (a shrug). Really like the look of the pattern but not all the picking up of stitches -- time consuming.

REading posts about the modular knits I interpreted that you don't have to pick up stitches nor do you have to sew together a bunch of smaller squares to get this pattern.

I went to the bookstore today to look for the book listed in the posts but couldn't find ANYTHING on modular knitting. Wanted to page through the book to answer these questions myself. And found the book on the internet to order...but now can't look through it for these answers either. So back to this vast sea of knowledge lurking out there...maybe someone could explain it to me?

P.S,. I did send the post about the safari type afghan and decided to use a black and white yarn to make 'zebra' type squares with black inbetween them. Thanks for all your help on that problem also.

and look through the tutorial page. You're right, you neither pick up stitches nor piece blocks together, but use short rows to create the designs. You may be able to order the book through an interlibrary loan. Or join the yahoo group and get access to the tutorials and when you post a message, you'll receive a scarf pattern that uses the technique.

Hi Carol, The modular knitting in the Iris Shreier book (Modular Knits) is largely done with short rows and there is much less picking up of stitches involved. The Ginger Luters book (Module Magic) contains more garment patterns and the techniques seem to involve more picking up of stitches and sewing. I have only tried a few things from these books, but this is my general impression of the techniques in them.
