I'll do it, Shelagh! I really like the way you can search on a yarn in your stash and find photos/patterns that others have posted using the same yarn. I have some stuff that I have no idea what to do with (all that leftover "Fun" (not) Fur from my sons' coonskin caps). I saw some great ideas there. I'll definitely pop over and check out your work!

Thanks for the explanation, Shelagh. You're right, the Yahoo group is closed to the public and that was done so members could easily exchange personal information such as for the 6x6 square exchanges. It was actually contemplated long before the sporgery occurred in May of 2006. It was created with the intent of being additional venue and not an alternative to RCTY. I think the primary reason some people chose to stay away from here is because the group is free of intimidation, harassment, etc. not only from sporgers but also from others who post here.

If I could find the list of free news servers for alt.comp.freeware, would you be interested?

Yup, I would. I've done some cursory searching in the past but never found anything.

I'm a member there, but very seldom read it. I find Yahoo groups hard to read especially when there are a lot of posts, such as there are over there on Yarners. I much prefer posting to a Usenet group. One nice thing about Ravelry is the way the groups are set up there.

There's one at nntp.aioe.org that's free and you don't need to sign up. It goes down occasionally, but not often. Has a limit of 25 posts per day though. That and disallowing crossposting to more than 3 groups is how the owner keeps spam/trolls down.

They just had a thread on that recently. Here are the links to the ones they mentioned:

I'm on Ravelry, too. I love it over there, still need to get my things together, and organised. I'm knittingmumma on Ravelry. busymum

Thank you Sue and Melinda for the links to free news servers.

Now can anyone recommend a good, free newsreader for OS X?

Shillelagh spun a FINE 'yarn':

Shillelagh. . .

I *was* a member there, but quickly left when I realized that one of the biggest spammers was actually in a moderation role there! VERY scarey indeed! Noreen

I'm on ravelry too, my id is yarnwright (of course!) I absolutely refuse to go back to the yahell group.... Noreen :D

YarnWright spun a FINE 'yarn': claring up the below quoted:

I really *should* clear that up, I WAS a member of Yarners, I AM a member of Ravelry. The spammer was a mod at the yahell group... grin. Noreen

I hope you're not talking about Cher or Nora, because I don't consider them to be spammers.

Of course, Cher and Nora are not spammers but she's not talking about them. You probably didn't know that she left the Yahoo group after she found out that I'm one of the moderators there. The fool just gave everyone an excellent example of why so many left RCTY. Lovely person, isn't she?
