What would you take to a desert island, stitching-wise? You have ONE box that you can fill--24" x 12" x 12". You will be marooned for four years. The island has food and water and shelter, but no LNS and no way to order and have things mail-dropped. ; -)
If you like, you can be marooned with a buddy and pool your stash into two boxes.
Me--Elan lap stand, Scarlet Quince's "Sense of Sight"
) WIP, chart and fabric for Wood Warblers #1, plus thread, needles, magnifier, scissors, and 2 or 3 hoops. If there's any room left, then WIP Gerda Bengtsson wildflower sampler and chart/thread.Monique in TX
Heh. Good thing I like to stich in hand - no need to waste space on a frame of any sort.
I'd take Drawn Thread's "Open Heart," "Marriage of Minds," and "Perenial Border;" Mirabilia's "Queen Mermaid" and "Mermaids of the Deep Blue;" Just Nan's "Patience," "Freedom Flowers," and "Black Magic," maybe "Common Ground;" and Cross N Patch's "Embellishments," "The Garden" and "A Quilter's Garden." Also my Ginghers, several packages of needles, my magnet board, a pencil, and if it fits, a small hoop for doing the hardanger on the Emie Bishop pieces.
Come with me! When I run out of my own stuff, I can at least start those two from your charts and leftover fibers, even if there's not enough floss left to finish them.
What would I take.... Medieval Majesty and Flower Power, with all their required supplies. And another large piece of fabric, my copies of The Proper Stitch and A to Z of Embroidery Stitches and some fantastic over dye and do a doodle cloth. Now, since I pack well, a 12x24 piece of canvas, one of my canvas work books and start another doodle cloth of canvas and needlepoint stitches. And a different overdye. And about 100 packages of needles, in different sizes...
A lot of floss, fabric, some canvas and needles. A couple of Dover coloring books for inspiration and patterns - probably one Art Deco stained glass and one more complicated one - maybe medieval scenes. And I assume I will be marooned with Anne and Cheryl, so I can borrow from them if necessary (and teach Anne to count - RDH:))
If God Forbid, i will land in a deserted Island i hope i will have some good sewing threads to repair any dammage to my clothes, some plasters etc, maybe very thin cloth to sieve water ... and Linda ,, would i be so lucky and have neccesities, and than time to create ,. i would create some Useful things ,,, and Inspirtaion??? wouldn`t i have enough from my suroundings ???? books to take with me ,,,, the BIGGEST reading book , + some good book on survival on an Island !!!! mirjam
And I started it, and got bogged down. It's been sitting in my UFO pile for a couple of years. That would definitely be a good one to take to a desert island - then I'd HAVE to work on it.
Good queston. I'd take my Kay's baby z - folds very flat, my tiny clip on magnifier, a few packs of 22,24,26 petites needles, a threader, and my little metallic scissors & my new ring-lock premax (that I think are good enough for cutwork), and thread heaven. Stash of overdyes - which I'll combine with Donna's SnC stash, and my Waterliliies. Drawn Thread - Marriage of True Minds, Indigo Rose Acorns, 18" & 12" stretcher bars and tacks, 11" Qsanps, roll of canvas, 24" by 36, Twister book (& silks), an Orna Willis "window in the Old City at Night" & "A Day with Melba", Laura J. Perrin "Fandango Sky", New World from Papillon, handful of little JBW Country French charts, Handful of Litle Leafs from Elizabeth's designs, the Ammager Panel form Needleprint, one of my Emie Bishop charts (probably the Faith Sampler book or Sunshine & Flowers), couple of good drawing pencils, small sketch pad, erasers, some graph paper, clearview ruler, and a couple of pieces of 32 & 28 ct linen - likely a 1/2 yard of LL vintage light exampler, and some cool PTP piece. And a couple of micron pigma pens. It'll all fit. Maybe a Mirabilia Mermaid that I haven't finished - or Fairy Idyll. Sure, it'll all squish right down - 12" is pretty deep. And squish in there the little "Stitches to Go" by Suzanne & Beth.
And of course, Donna & I will swap stuff. ;^) Smash the lid on. Pack well.
The question was what would you take, assuming water, food and shelter were provided. It's supposed to be fun, not a slam at anyone or a question of necessities.
I'll fill my box with all sorts of flosses if others will let me use their patterns! No sense in having multiple copies of the same pattern on the island. My buddy can fill hers/his with different types and colors of fabric. I'll use my hoop as a bracelet so it doesn't have to take up room in the box.
Okay, so when are you going to maroon us all Monique? It might take me a couple weeks to gather up all this floss!
I'm *so* ready for spring. They're predicting below zero weather for Wed. again. This is *March*, I tell you, *MARCH*!!!!!
Joan, looking very much forward to her trip to Albuquerque in 2 days!
Jealous of that trip to ABQ. Don't forget your sunscreen - it's deceptive there! Definitely take a ride on the tram to the top of Sandia Peak - great to go for a drink -but, the restaurant has never been really great - though it could've changed by now. Weather there could be anything - cold in the a.m. And p.m., but hot in the afternoon.
Darn, I really miss that great light there. Have fun and don't forget to stop at the Owl for an authentic Green Chile Cheeseburger (the original bar/grill is about 90 mi south, in the middle of nowhere en route to White Sands - and was included in the book "Stallion Gate" by Martin Cruz Smith), which is almost as good as the ones at the original place.
Linda i know what the question was , but i am too realistic and really think in that way. When you had the Katherina disaster, and people here [ on this ng ] started to give advice, as to what one should pack and send to the people who lost so much, i couldn`t believe some of the items suggseted, nore some of the things lacking in all suggestions. I have an active artistic imagination , still when somebody asks me a question like the above, that is my answer. Based on my life experience. I wasn`t slamming at anyone , but was really puzzeled why someone going to a desert Island would need books with Ideas of what to create,,,,, The island [provided that like you suggested it had water , food and shelter ], would also have vegetation, water scenes , panorama on the surounding sea or ocean , birds , fish etc ,, all Wonderful ideas for creating , one`s impressions from the Island ,,,,, Other wise what is the point, in being on an Island ? close youreslf at home in a bare room with all those things you suggested and create there what you can create,,,,, Imagine Katherina [ God forbid] ruined your house ,, how will yhou start from SCRATCH ,, what would be the mosr essential things in your life ,,, What would you save from your house if you had , 4 minutes to run to safety .... That is a real challange . mirjam
