Latest Angel Framing Options

Hi Guys, I went to Michael's today with two of my Needlework Group friends. Talk about slim pickins at that frame dept.'! It was only marginally better than what was available at H.L.! I got estimates for two framing options and have photos at the Webshots album with good close ups of the frames alone. Both options use the same mats but one has a large frame and the other has a smaller frame with a fillet. And HONEST -- I was not the one to choose this stuff. I pulled out the frames I thought might look good -- large, small, fancy, plain and then the framer and my friends whittled it down to the one large one. I said we needed to have an option with a smaller frame and we all decided on that together. I don't even want to talk about trying to pick the mat! The one friend (Marsha) had been with me to visit the first 2 framers so she knew that we had to start off with that pale cream next to the angel. My other friend (Sue) and the framer kept trying to put other colors next to that funky fabric and ended up agreeing that it pretty much had to be the cream :-)! Next we tried blues and purples for the top mat, just to keep the framer and Sue happy and those were all put in the discard pile. Then we tried to find something like the rosy tan dark flesh tone we had chosen at the first frame shop but that was also a bust. What we ended up with is a shimmery, sparkly very nice lilac-y taupe -- very odd combination to say the least but it looks pretty good. It's the same shimmery mat as the white one I picked out at that second framers shop, just not white -- LOL! The large frame is 3" wide and the smaller frame is 2" wide. I went with the same 1/4" reveal for the cream mat and an approximate 3" reveal for the top mat. The smaller frame option is shown with a plain matte gold fillet. The framer was Asian and spoke very broken English. She kept saying she would give me "best price" and I kept telling her I wanted the standard price since I didn't know when I would be bringing the piece to be framed and had no idea if I would have a coupon to use!!! This means I'm not too sure about what the actual price will be

-- hopefully what she quoted me!! Here's the damage: 1.) The large frame with conservation glass is $350.59 2.) Small frame with same glass & fillet is $208.12

I need to know if you would like me to go to Joanns and any other independent framers I can find once I return from Lizard Land. There is another framer here in town I can visit if you would like. Also, Dawn, the second framer will be home from her holiday when I return and I can try to get over there and get photos of what was chosen and even see if there isn't a third option that might be suitable. Please, let me know if you guys have any preferences for any of the current options. I know some of you want plain and simple and some of you want more decorative so it's going to be a challenge (to say the least) to try and come up with an option that doesn't piss off to many people and still presents the Angel in the best way. With all the balls you're trying to bounce: don't forget about the plaque. I think the majority felt it would be best on the frame rather than on the mat, but that may depend upon the size of the frame. Dianne

Regardless of the price, I really like the smaller frame! It's kinda hard to get an image in my mind with the pic taken at such an angle.

And thanks, Dianne, for reminding us about the plaque! I don't know if there's any way to put the plaque on the frame itself....I think it would almost *have* to go in an insert on the mat. Tia Mary, do you think it's time for me to have the plaque done?

My first choice, if we have the funds to cover it, would be the Simon option. I just love the gold color picking up the gold in the wings. My second choice would be the smaller frame from Michaels.

I personally think we have enough options to choose from. The more choices we have, the harder it will be to pick one.

I still like the Designs by Susan first, and the second choice would be the small frame at Michaels. But I know my vote doesn't really count either!

Everyone's voice is heard. Those who did not actually stitch her but have remained loyal and interested from the onset, are welcome to add their opinions and help us resolve the final issues. This has been a total RCTN project from the beginning and will continue to be one to the very end.

If all of us who were afraid of the bickering/fighting/vitriole never volunteered to go forward, we'd be nowhere. Ya just have to wade through and ignore the muck. Yin Yang: For every death there is life. Really love that book I'm reading!

Oh, I've definitely been following her all right! I was too late to get in on stitching her, my schedule was a little crazy at the onset and by time I figured out that I would have time, the rotation was filled up.

She's so beautiful, how could I not be interested in her?

I'm at DD's and have to access rctn through Google so it's a bit funky. I didn't forget about the plaque. I discussed it with my nedlework friends and all of the different framers. I think the only way to attach it would be to have two holes drilled in the top corners and then I could hang it from the bottom of the frame. I might have to use justt etiniest bit of fine chain -- one or two links -- so that it would be right up next to the frame. I did ask 2 of the framers about it and they were NOT in favour of putting it inside the glass. It would have to be mounted on the bottom mat and then a spot would have to be cut in the top mat to go around it. Not sure of any other options. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

That option was what I would have suggested. I was a framer at Michael's (and Hobby Lobby for a little while) in a former life (they PAID me to get experience doing something fun--can you IMAGINE???) and it occurs to me that they may just not want to cut it like that because it's a bit tricky.

Hobby Lobby has laser cutters and they can do anything you want with nary a blurp in their day. Did you ask HL about that option?

My local Michael's had a 50% off framing coupon this week...

That might help decisions, cost-wise.

According to a friend of mine, the 50% off coupon doesn't really work. She told me that she had checked the cost of framing a picture and then decided to wait.

When she saw the 50% off coupon, she decided that she might as well have it done immediately at the lower cost.

They told her that the original price they had given her was already discounted and the 50% off coupon wouldn't change anything.

Whether or not that's the normal routine for all Michael's stores I don't know, but if it is, the coupon is basically useless.

I'd like to offer an option that perhaps hasn't been considered for framing the Firehouse Angel? Instead of someone from RCTN choosing how to frame the angel and its cost, perhaps everyone who wanted to donate to the framing could pool their monetary contribution and forward the total collection with the Angel and its plaque to the firemen for them to use to frame her as they wish (and maybe include a list of recommended framers in their area experienced with needlework?)? Any monies left over can be used for the Firemen's Fund (???) or some other such worthy cause of their choice?

In this way, perhaps those who couldn't help with the stitching can contribute to its framing cost?

This way, the final decision for framing options would be that of the firemen.

Just a suggestion.

Sky

P.S. I've always thought that framing/finishing any needlework is the hardest part of any project.

I think the ones in my paper usually say "not good for custom framing".

Not too sure about that idea, although I can see where you`re coming from. I feel that it would be much better for it to be handed over complete in every way. I like Mary`s idea of a gold frame - it doesn`t want to be too ornate, does it? Thank goodness the idea of "charring it" and hanging it from a pole has fallen by the wayside. Nicely framed it will last forever.
