Ideas help

I just received a bunch of DH's grandmother's yarn and material stash. She is in her late 80's and is not able to do it any more due to poor eyesight and difficulty with her hands. In the fabric was a piece with birds on it. It is white with squares marked and in the middle is a bird scene/picture and then the species name. She loves birds, and DH and I were thinking maybe I could use it to make her a quilt to thank her and show her how much she's loved and appreciated. It would be either a wall hanging or a lap size depending on design. There were (I think) eight different birds and the squares were about 12 in. So far I only have 2 ideas 1-put a shashing around them to make a wall hanging, or 2- alternate the bird blocks with bird fabric squares to make a cuddle quilt for her. I'll try to get some pics. taken of the fabric and put them on my webshots site, until then, any other creative ideas?

TIA!!

What about attic windows.

I think you already have great ideas Charlotte! If you decide to go with the plan of alternating squares with some bird print fabrics, let me know! My mother is also a "birder" so when I made her quilt, I collected some bird prints. I'd be happy to share any of the leftovers with you if you need them!

Thanks Tia Mary. I hadn't thought of using florals. That would probably go well with the squares too.

When I made an attic windows quilt, I didn't do the insets. I made the corner using half square triangles.

I like the attic windows idea and HST would make it much easier. Thanks Mary!!! I could even do windows of bird fabric to make it bigger for cuddling in. Time to do some calculations for a shopping trip tomorrow!!

i just watched one of them today on Simply Quilts. i loved the 3D not a Y seam in sight version, tho it takes a wee bit more fabric. easy to sew tho. pretty quick too from the look of it. much like those 3D Flying Geese i love for trees.

3D also gives little pockets to play with if its a lap quilt. i love my lap quilt to snuggle under and feel rather than one to just look at. showing off your lap quilt to everyone is more fun too. have fun!! jeanne

Ohhhhh - I think a little lap quilt would be perfect. That way, she could hold it close to her and feel it and touch it and "hug" it. I have a little bit of fabric with tropical parrots on it if you're interested. The colors are rather bright so I'm not sure it would "work" in with what you have, but I'd gladly contribute. Email me and let me know.....

Thanks Patti, but I don't think parrots would go well with these panels. Thanks for the offer.
