Disappointed and frustrated with using Sidekick

You may recall several weeks back when I excitedly confessed to and posted about my stealth shopping where I bought a Sizzix Sidekick and an alphabet font set.

Well, I finally sat down this weekend to do a page or two of scrapping and broke out my sidekick. I discovered I really dislike using the thing. For me the task of cutting out the letters is TEDIOUS. I hate having to cut the paper before being able to cut the dies out and have decided I'm going to return it to Michael's. :-( I'm glad I kept the receipt.

I'll just continue to use alphabet stamps and stickers instead of having a Sidekick. I think I can make/purchase individual die cuts at the Craft & Floral Warehouse store near my home and will just drive there when I'm in the mood for or feel I must have alphabet die cuts.

I'm disappointed and frustrated because I imagined I would LOVE having the thing.

Marcia,

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I have not invested in the Sidekick yet due to the cost and really appreciate knowing the possible downsides as well as the positives. It will assist me in having realistic expectations if I make the purchase and will certainly play into my ultimate decision to invest or not to invest. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you but thanks for the experience :)

Yes, I agree. I don't have the sidekick, but I do have the regular size sizzix. Cutting the paper first is the pain. But so far that's all that I'm dissappointed in. I haven't bought any of the letters, I just by the shapes and designs. When I need letters I go to ebay and type in sizzix then the font I want. You can buy them pre cut and usually in the colors you want for very cheap. And usually if you buy more than one set say different colors from the same person, the shipping is cheaper. I figure its much better than paying at least 75.00 for one font with half off at michaels. Just my 2 cents. Hope that helps.

OOOOHHH I totally agree wit the statemnet on it not being made o last. I have also talked to others now that have it and have been told that i seems like every other die cuts or not or just partially.

NOW FOR THE GREAT NEWS. I had been wanting to see one, but Accucuts has a little die cu machine too called the ZaZ. It looks like a VW beetle acually! Anyhow my fav lss here, she is starting to carry Accucuts stuff and had oe of those ZaZ's. She showed me how it cut a Quikcutz wafer die and then a sizzlet die. i tried it too and all you do is put your de and piecce of paper in a slot, roll it on the table and PRESTO!! It has like two wheels that it turns the drum on. She told me she did not lik ethe sidekick either and the Zaz has cut perfect EVERYTIME!!!

So maybe that would be one for ya'll to see and try? I decided though that I wanted a machine that uses ALL dies and got the ZipeMate from accucuts, but STILL waiting on my cutting pads as aI posted in another thread!!

Hope this helps and like ya'll say My 2 cents!!

I just bought the Sidekick today because Michael's had a 50% off coupon. I haven't tried it yet but after reading the responses I just may return it. What do you mean by cutting out the letters?

If you use it, don't try to cut more than 1 piece of paper. You might get away with 2 if it is just paper. Not cardstock. Lynn

Well Marcia,

I got a Sidekick *free* with a magazine subscription here in the UK. I had read many reports of the cutting plates breaking on first use and that Sizzix were suggesting they were a bad batch of plates. Well...all this talk has encouraged me to get mine out and give it a spin....guess what....MAY PLATES BROKE....waaaah! I am glad I didn't pay for this system and I am off now to complain loudly to Sizzix via email. I understand that they have willing replaced all the plates but it is £30+ pounds purchase here in the UK and frankly if I had paid for it I would not have been a happy bunnie! It is not worth the money and I doubt if I would use it much or fork out for the over priced sizzlet dies, even if they are cute!!!! I will be sticking to the big version and use my converter to cut the sizzlet dies that came with the Sidekick.

Oh my Jacqui! You are being a BIG enabler! LOL! That looks like a great deal on QVC.

I hope you are feeling better. I read your post where you said you were going to watch QVC over the weekend while recuperating.

Marcia, I'm so sorry to hear about your disappointment with the sidekick :( But thank you for the feedback. My next "big" purchase will be some kind of die cutting system, so any information/opinions I read about are very useful.
