A friend brought over some crumpets from England last week. Oh joy, but it took me years to call them crumpets. My Scottish mother would definitely call them 'pikelets'.

Yup, that's what I knew them as in my growing up years. Took me aeons to unlearn it. BTW, we moved from the Northeast U.K. to Montreal (mostly French) to Ohio (various parts), to Florida and then to New Orleans. I'm still learning the correct local terms for some things!!!!

Must say this made me chuckle. I went to a big law school in a small town and at least half the students were women. And a pick percentage of the local bar was as well, including the county's lead felony prosecutor. Yet somehow, all the women were "lady lawyers" and the prosecutor was the "lady prosecutor" Didn't bother me any, but made a friend of mine livid, because she felt she was being looked down upon. We never heard about the "gentlemen lawyers."
Were there any?????
(My definition of "gentleman" may be different from yours).
