An interesting day at the Madrona Fiber Arts Retreat

I spent the day with knitters - First I went to two classes. One was on various kinds of closures that one could make instead of using plain buttons. Second was for making cabled fingerless gloves - the basic gloves weren't particularly hard but the teacher had lots of interesting techniques and I learned some things. This evening the Yarn Harlot was the speaker and had us laughing so hard that tears were running down my face. She is really a kick. She has decided that knitting is neither an art nor a craft but a sport - so they had an Olympic cast-on. I went to the program with Ranee - I ran into her in the lobby a while before the evening program, so we sat together. She is fine and told me about her kids who are all doing well. (She didn't have any new pictures of them, though) She was making a really nice sweater for Dominick. I did make a stop at the yarn market but did a pretty good job of restraininig myself - only two skeins of sock yarn (hand painted merino/tencel), two skeins of dk, and 4 oz of lace weight plus some stitch markers.

Next year I will go for a longer time - but I was late signing up and a number of the classes I wanted were closed.

Isn't she a hoot? It was the same when she was in Winnipeg. My sides and face hurt from laughing so hard.

Hi Judy,

Glad you had such a great time and thanks for letting us know that Ranee is all right. She hasn't been here in quite a while and she has been missed.

Hugs,

Nora

Oh, isn't she a hoot?? I picked up "Meditations for Women Who Knit Too Much" and just howled over it. I also bought copies for two friends & a sister! Her item about the plain garter garment she was going to make because it was mindless and didn't need to be watched, and turned into a total slow-down-Zen experience because EVERY SINGLE STITCH split the yarn? Well...not a week after I read that, I picked up the two-ply cashmere laceweight and accompanying scarf pattern I got last summer at the Md. Sheep & Wool Fest, and guess what. Yep. Even my Addi Turbos split that damn yarn. I can do two rows and then I need to walk around and stretch and focus on something distant. Just today I picked up a pair of bamboo size threes to see whether they'll work better (imagine, something Addi Turbos fail at!).

Lucky you and lucky Ranee!

Judy sounds you had a great time. Nice that you met up with Ranee, she must be bussy with her childeren, Ranee when you just reading us, a big hug from your neighbour to the north. I am now also on the mailing list of the Madrona Fiber Arts Retreat, and hope next year to be in time for signing up. The same for Maiwa in Vancouver. I missed out on signing up for that one because I was away in Toronto for the summer. Good programmes like that always fill up very quickly. Next time better, we will meet for sure Judy, and thanks for sharing

Sign- up this year was a hassle. They are trying to improve it for next year. One thing they are planning to do is to put up the class descriptions about two weeks before they start sign-up so that people can take the time to figure out what they want before the rush begins. Some of the classes filled up in the first few hours this year. The new site gives them more space and may allow them to offer additional classes. It is also easier for people coming from a distance - though it is not quite as cozy as the old place. They also had a large room for the fiber market which made that work much better. I ended up just going for one day because I that worked with the classes I wanted that were still open - and I live really close. The classes were good, though, and most people were pleased. By the way, I met someone from Duncan BC - her name escapes me, though. She was in a class with me.

Was the person from Duncan a knitter or did she also spin and weave....??

Great to get all this info, I really hope to be there next year. You never know what happens in a meantime though, but never mind, have a plan so you can change it. That is my husbands motto....LOL

I think she does lots of things, probably including spinning and weaving but I am not certain. She was a very nice person - we chatted, shared scissors etc but since we didn't use names much in that setting, so I am afraid I can't remember her name. She mentioned having gone to the Salt Spring Island gathering etc.
