Thank you Nora, and also to everyone else who replied! As for patience - that's one of the reasons it took so long. I did it in between other projects so as not to get sick of it. I was worried the border would drive me crazy, but it was so few stitches that it hardly took any time at all. It turned out much better than I expected, so I'm thrilled with it. Now.... if it only didn't shed.....
