I guess I'd consider it a true quit since it lasted for 13 years. If I hadn't married Mr. Collins- who is a heavy smoker- I know I would not have started again three years ago. I resisted for 5 months and then caved.

Leslie, I work best when I want to get something done by a particular time, too. Without a deadline, I tend to procrastinate, though I don't work too well under pressure. For one thing, I can't stay up late enough. But if I have a reasonable deadline, I do pretty well.

Leslie, you GO, Girl!!! I really hope you're proud of yourself ... just
*saying* that you're going to quit is more than most folks can do.
My daddy quit about 30 years ago (give or take a couple of years) ... and we still chuckle over the way he did to this day! Every day he'd carry a single cigarette in his shirt pocket - and whenever the urge to smoke got strong, he'd take that little cigarette out of his pocket and ask it "Who's stronger? You or me?" People would stare at him as if he'd grown two heads!! It was the office joke for a long time ...
But really, Leslie, any way that you do it is best. 'Sides if you do it yourself (no patches, no drugs, etc) then you'll be able to say YOU and YOU alone did it!!
Hugs!!! Connie (who's happy dancin' for Leslie!!! Yay!!!!)
I'm rootin' for you!!!!

Can you make your home a smoke-free zone so nobody smokes in your house? That might help when smokers visit.
Don't work too hard on the weight loss for a bit -- concentrate on the smoking first, while trying not to eat more. Maybe add in some exercise if you are able.

It would seem stopping smoking, eating reasonably and just moving as much as possible would be a great goal. That in itself is good. Don't worry about numbers. If you go over to the Real Age site there is a ton of great info. I have enjoyed that and learned a lot. You can do this Leslie. Hugs, Taria

Roberta, I don't think there's much you can do about grandchildren, at least not right now.
I was up at church today, taking down the Christmas trees (6) and un-decorating the more in-your-face displays (2 funerals later this week, need a more solemn appearance in the sanctuary), with the help of an older couple, and the preacher's 2 boys. The boys are ages 9 & 2 1/2, both of them entertaining, energetic, and even helpful. They got a bit "rambunctious" after an hour, playing w/ light switches and running down the halls, yelling and screaming, and reminding me why I wanted kids when I was *younger*. It was delightful, tho', to corral the kids, esp. when the 2 1/2 yr. old came up and gave me a hug around the waist (he's tall; his parents are
6'+) and older brother hugged me when we left, assuring me "See you Sunday!" So I feel I've had my "grandma" session for this week. ;-)
Good luck, Roberta. My boys don't have any plans for children, either; fine by me; I get my "fix" in the church nursery. LOL
Leslie, good luck to you, too, w/ the smoking stuff. I hope you'll treat yourself to a massage when the going gets tough. It's good for you and doesn't take up any space in the quilting room.
Happy New Year, Everyone!
R/Sandy-- no resolve here... ;-D

OTOH, as of yesterday, I'm told the second grandbaby is on the way.....
Gotta finish the charity quilt on the frame (Victory Junction Gang Camp) and get kicking on baby quilts I guess.....
Have till end of summer, but that comes so much sooner than you expect...

Good for you Leslie - I'm with you on the weight loss thing - I have really got to drop 20-30 lbs. and I'm determined to do it. The smoking thing - did that quite a few years ago now, thankfully - you will be so proud of yourself when you're not dependent on that stupid weed ever again. Good luck.

Info from Mayo Clinic on quitting. Maybe you'll find something helpful here.

Well that, all by itself was a good reason to divorce Mr. Collins:) I have to say that when I quit smoking & DH was still smoking - kissing him was not my favorite thing to do. Now, I love kissing him. (Before I married, I dated a lot of non-smokers - I have no idea how they could kiss me - yuk!)

Have a chat with a pharmacist and maybe a different doctor, there are new drugs out and the longer the old ones are out, the more they know about which drugs they are ok with and which they aren't, even if the first choice drugs aren't possible, it would be surprising if there was nothing that can help. I saw this article today

I can't decide whether to make any resolutions or not. If I did, like a lot of you, losing weight would be on there, inactivity following surgery has let a few pounds creep on, but I'm not sure focusing on weight is the best thing, focusing on fitness should have weight loss as a side effect. Similarly, picking something like eating 5 fruits and veg a day, would be a positive thing that should displace some junk, then also result in weight loss. So I can't decide, avoiding making resolutions through fear of failure is silly, but then so is setting unrealistic goals, so it can seem easier just to ignore them and not have any, but that leads to lack of focus and time wasting! Isn't life complicated!
