That's what my brother says. He told me I would hate it - that I like to see the sun too much to actually live there (although Fred would LOVE the humidity).

]Yikes - how close are you???

well, if that particular fire had gotten out of control, all of Paradise would probably have gone up. as it was, that's why CDF jumped on it the way they did. these canyons tend to create "chimney effects". they had four planes and three helicopters on it, almost immediately. they had it "out" within about 12 hours. they're really aggressive around here. i live in the middle of a forest, you see.

Your Dad's place sounds wonderful. A little to warm for me in SLO, though. Is his place ner the ocean? There's a lovely National park just south of Los Osos, which is a fun, artsy place.

that's what Jamie says, too. BUT - it seems to be in pockets. some areas very near Seattle get LOTS of sunshine - but with cooler temps.

but i'm claustrophobic, remember. and i grew up in Kansas and Missouri. i think that's part of why i like living near the ocean - - the "you can see forever" feeling, without the tornados!

There is this littlie tiny community just north of Vancouver BC - it's called Deep Cove and it is PERFECT for me. My coffee shop is right there, cute little cottages, kayaks waiting in the water, mountains rising right out of the water, huge trees... bike paths through the park... eagles soaring... just a short ride to Vancouver which is a great city - Love. Been meaning to take my husband there for years now, but having a hard time convincing him to think about moving out of the country. Unless I said let's go to Belize or England or Australia, then he'd be right there.

Good grief, Vicki. How do you live with the strain of that? Becki "In between the moon and you, the angels have a better view of the crumbling difference between wrong and right." -- Counting Crows

My dad and his wife have a fifth wheeler, and love it. They own a home on Cape Cod, have a manufactured home in Naples, FL and spend a big part of the year on the road. The fifth wheel is cool, it even has an "upstairs." They pull it witha big Dodge Diesel pickup truck.

They've been all over, and find Naples to be cheap and fun in the winter. Cape Cod is all right, we had a summer house there when I was a kid, but it's not nearly as attractive now as it was thirty years ago. Too much development, too many people. Much of the main road on the Cape (Rte. 6) looks like a strip mall. If I were going to buy some Massachusetts seashore real estate, it would be on Cape Ann, not Cape Cod. Cape Ann is what Cape Cod used to be.

I've been all over the US, and love the Pacific Northwest. For a while, we considered moving there; but (1) it's too far from Boston and (2) the economy is the pits right now. We love New England and would stay, but housing is ungodly expensive. Right now, the game plan is to sell the house here once the girls are grown, buy a condo here (because here will always be home), and buy a home in Coastal North Carolina. The girls can live in the condo until they get established, and we can use it for holidays, visits and my doctor's appointments.

The climate in NC is hot and humid, to be sure, but it's pretty hot and humid here in the summertime, and houses generally aren't air conditioned up here. I've been reassured that bugs aren't a problem, and we've never seen any during our trips down there. (half a dozen times now) The cost of living is very low, and my disability pension would go a lot further. It's also only a couple hours flight or a day's drive to get back to Boston.

I'd also be okay with living in Germany, because I have most of my family there. But Bob doesn't speak German, and it's really not a nice place to live if you aren't an ethnic German. Canada is nice, too; but then there's the economy problem. Both of us like Italy to visit, but I could never live there; and we really didn't like France.

But time will tell. We cannot leave my father in law, ever. He is no kid, and DD is his reason for living. Also, he grew up two streets over, and has lived in this house for almost 60 years. We would never uproot him, and we have no pressing reason to leave Boston. DD is seriously against any plan that has us moving from Boston -- she wants us here, and would be delighted if we kept this house for her. That's actually what might end up happening, we'll see.

Sooz -- Please understand my complete confusion here, never having been to CA. Does Northern CA catch on fire? The fires are kind of freaking me out.
