OT: If you could, would you?

They are, if you work hard enough at it... and have simple tastes. The nightlife is the owls and coyotes.... Kaytee "Simplexities" on

Don't know. Probably, since it can't be sub-divided. I'd think the main problem with multiple residences would be water availability-- the well to the house is way out near the front of the property. A second one was in the process of being put in behind the house, but not connected yet. The pump can do only so much.... Kaytee "Simplexities" on

i'm not adverse to working hard [although DH seems to be allergic]. i'm just afraid i'm too old, at this point, to be able to do it. simple tastes are not a problem. nightlife is not a problem - as long as i've got my critters safely under cover.

I'm wondering if it could be used as an animal refuge (mainly dogs and cats)? Courtney's dream is to own a lot of land so she can run a place like the Best Friends Sanctuary in Southern Utah. Only, of course, she wanted *her* place to be in California!

My father was still doing it at almost 70, and complaining how he had to rest three days for every day he really worked.... He had just finished discing a field to ready it for a last planting before winter, and had cut and baled a field of hay about a week before .... His buddy who's helping me with some of the "estate items" is already 70, has a 90 acre ranch, and is still a commercial fisherman....The guy across the road is retired military, so he's somewhere in his 40's or 50's at least-- he's also growing something that requires the use of a tractor (probably hay, too-- his wife raises horses). Tough old coots, all of them... Kaytee "Simplexities" on

i envy them. i'm not. i can do things for short stretches [thanks to the gym] but not for extended periods of time. i know what you mean, tho. i have an

80-year-old uncle who still helps "bring the hay in".

i'm afraid if the place was mine i'd do something like "raise trees".

that, i could REALLY get into. unfortunately, most people who try to do that have to have a really good job to pay for it!

Hi Floyd,

How've you been? Haven't heard from you for a while. Got your salmon and moose?

Dark again, but the snow brightens the nights. The glow of the fire and the solidity of these logs make it cozy here. Have you been having some spectacular lights?

That's true about adventure. But I'm easy. I can have adventure feeding the sparrows and working with beads. It's a frame of mind and a self of self and your connectedness with the world. We've got a raven visiting our bird feeder. Such a big galoot!

But, even in Alaska it's getting late now.

Goodnight.

Yes, and there might be no time left for beading. I know how much work some of the mushers have to do, even when they have handlers.

good point!

i loved being able to look out the windows and see the goats, geese, chickens, and ducks in the pastures. They weren't as "high maintenance", but they can be expensive.

my sweet Johnny called and offered to buy me a goat for Christmas. he knows how much i missed having them around. unfortunately, i had to turn him down . . . no barn, no fencing, and even then, no windows facing that direction to be able to see them. it was such a sweet offer, tho . . . especially with the way he feels about them!

Actually, many water problems can be solved by using composting toilets, greywater recycling systems and xenoscaping. If you use your clean well water for drinking and washing alone, you generally don't run low. Irrigation is the big water hog in dry climates, followed by sanitary plumbing. Many sites with limited water availability can be used with little impact on the residents.

That's not an issue here right now: Since August 1, we've had 26 days with one inch of rain or more falling. I think we're like a foot above our annual rainfall of about 45".

I know quite a little bit about this because I helped my sister research water use for her rural New Hampsire vacation home. It has a well, and New Hampshire does get plenty of rainfall most times, but most of those shallow wells have seasons or years when they run dry. Also, the ground is so rocky that you want to limit water or build an ex$pensive outsized septic system. She didn't have to go the composting toilet route, but she uses a front loader washing machine up North, and they are very careful about water use.

My sister and I got slammed dunked when we lost ourjobs. For whiel we went thru a really bad thing with ost self respect, self esteeem and felling like we had been the ones who were wrong. We weren't. The guy is out there bad mouthing us, nd at first we felt like we couldn't hold our head up. My sister is tring to get her web design business to flourish, and since I have beading and and entertainment company as side businesses, I have decided to try to make more of my entertainment business. I was really only working part time in it, but have decided to break out and expand. We went unenploye on May 23, and sinc that time, i have soent countess hours learning new suff, creating new cotumes, taking classes, and going to conventions and lectures. For a period of time, we went thru some serious self pity and fear and depression and we are not going down in to that big dark hole again. I am going to branch out in the family entertainment market here, in some unique diversified ways. I still cry over the loss of all my precous art work, and it has hurt me more than I will let my family see. I have only a few pieces I didn't have to sell to keep paying my rent. I was made to feel like I had won the title Town Son Of A Bitch, by the employer we walked away from. Fortunately, life goes on. If I was younger, I would have run away already. But I can't .. I am too busy trying to fix this ... Las Vegas is a great place to live ... so I couldnt ask for better, or imagine myself elsewhere, but I sure would like to live in a better neighborhood. And I want more than anything to be 100% self employed again ... although we are asking for an extension on our original unmployment claim, etc. Hope you're going to be alright ! Rainbow

Becki, I thought what you wrote about lying, etc. was my personal problem and nobody else had it ! Look, i worked in a fairly, for me, simple job which I was @1 at for 9 years. The people who owned thecompany treated us well enough, but never really knew us. When the mother and aunts sold out to the son and I lost my job, it has een hell. i can't use him as a reference becasue of the legal problem and he has said some shitty things about me and my sister. You'd think that lyalty and doing a good job is worth something, wouldn't you ? Well, I am not able to find tradiional work ... so I am going to create what I can from this mess. I do not have traditional skills. Lucky me, I been a renegade all my life ! I was fairly mouthy before, but 7 month in hell has loosened my lips even more .... I hate liars and lying and I just cannot ever think about being quiet anymore. Your situation's similar to mine in a way. What kind of stuff this old employer is telling people is a mysterty, but they look at me like I have 3 heads, when I apply for workm and they check the only reference I have. The guy is a lying jerk and he knows e has destroyed my ability to get a tradiional job. He's gonna wet his freekin' pants when I scoot around him and WIN something of my own out of this. I alays try to make something positive out of chaos. In fact, i may be taking a job for the Chritsmas season, with the Salvation Army, collecting money in the kettle fund drive. now what, I want to do it. It'spartly community service, and partly networking. I am going to have to be out in public in my neighborhood, in front of my regular grocery store. My intent is to network my ass off, loking for opportunities ... I just know someone is going to come by with an idea I haven;t thought of. It's payng me $6.50 per .. 23 cents, because i did it in 1992 when I forst arrived in Vegas .. It was my first job here ...

25 cents because I agreed to play a musical instrument. I play an autoharp. I do not play it well and itis only at home that I do it ... but I am going to be standing out there doingit. I know people are going to talk to me and for5 weeks i will be able to network and forget about all this stupid crap that has happened. I remain forever hopeful ! And me, .... I am permanently single, no kids ... I have picked up and moved wheneverI chose to. Once, I left one city with $27 in my pocket and not a clue what I was going to do when I arrived at the city I had a ticket to go to. I landed on my feet, not my head ! And I am not particularly skilled or lucky, but I am blessed ! You can get past this. Running away to Vegas, has been the best place I ever ran to. I really found alot here and I wasn;t expecting to. I was expecting to be here as a stop on my way elsewhere ... i would love to live in San Francisco, but it is too expensive ! And there is that earthquake thing ... I think someone else said in all this that it was just that one job that was the problem for you. I feel like that is true of me. You will have to work this out, you will find a job, eventually, and move on ... Rainbow

oh dear. Jalynne, I certainly don't mean it that way when *I* ask it, and I often do because I'm obsessively curious. Would it help you to know that when some people ask it this question has absolutely no judgements attached, either negative OR positive---for me this is true because I don't have enough information to *make* a judgement----if I did I'd be past the asking for more info part. I ask because I truly DO wonder...and want to know. I'm sorry if that catches you on a sore spot sometimes. Always feel free to say so!! Sarajane
