OT: Innocent?

My point was: They had the man pinned down on the ground and then shot him in the head. Didn't they take the time to see if he had bombs on him? I really don't know. In the flurry of activity, with emotions running high . . . I simply don't know. But it would seem that they already had him pinned down. If he had bombs ready to go, shooting him wouldn't have mattered, they'd still have gone off - killing the officers who were holding him down.

I suppose if he HAD bombs on him, we'd all be whooping and hollering that we "got him". The fact that he had no bombs on him makes me pause. Particularly in the manner described in USAToday.

I meant *exactly* what I said. So far as I am concerned, here in Canada we accept all sorts of immigrants, and as long as they become Canadians first, and something else second, I hope they will always be accepted. We have recently had an excellent example of what I am talking about in the person of our Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Paul Martin. He is a very sincere, practicing Roman Catholic. Pope Benedict XVI has recently put out a directive that all Catholics *must* oppose same sex marriages. Paul Martin put the whole weight of the Prime Minister's office behind the recent Canadian Bill legalizing same sex marriages. He put his duty, as he saw it, to Canada *first*, and to his religion a very distant second. As per Voltaire, I dont agree with his opinion on same sex marriage, but I would have been alsolutely *livid* with him if he had changed his mind because of what the Pope told him to do.

It could only be split second timing, Dianne - he refused to stop, a LOT was going on at the time, the lives of MANY people were at risk. How would you feel had they hesitated long enough to let him detonate a bomb, resulting in perhaps scores of people being killed? In such a situation you don`t have time to search a potential suicide bomber. A normal terrorist who bombs but doesn`t want to die might be a different matter. One hackneyed old phrase which, in this case is very applicable - "He who hesitates is lost".

How could he detonate a bomb if they had him pinned to the ground?

I would think if he was a suicide bomber, unable to complete his mission on a train or bus, he would have - while running - found the biggest, busiest building and blow himself up.

I don't have an answer. I don't think any of us do. I'm troubled by the fact the man was pinned to the ground before they shot him. I ALSO realize the extreme fear, confusion, et al. Dianne

Dianne ,,,, excuse me but your question shows your Lucky unknowing .

A triggger could be fixed to arm or had level.

IF If If are the main words we all use after the fact. Those who weren`t there , or anytime in such a situation , should be a bit less judgemental about it . >

if you ever were with a fire starting in your presence in a closed room ,, and you had no obvious means to put it out , that is the closest you come to it .... With Time the British police won`t be so quick in shooting. like all law people in the world they will study the incident and be better prepared , next time that Alas will come . . mirjam

NL had some very interesting things to say about Re: OT: Innocent?:

So toddling around behaving VERY suspiciously and willfully refusing to obey reasonable instructions from duly authorized law enforcement trying to do their job and give the general public the level of safety said public screams for is just dandy in your world?

Come on, you can do better than this ;-) Surely you know even more insulting words. Btw: you're catholic, right? Please make sure to mention these postings and your thoughts about killing people at your next visit to the church. I'm sure your spiritual caregiver will be most happy to help you find some suitable prayers to keep you out of your hell.

It does not justify killing someone, no. Wether it's dandy or not.. I have no clue what dandy means, so whatever. But personally I don't want to live in a world where it's OK to shoot someone just because he's behaving suspiciously.

Yet there was time to pin him down and shoot him in the head 5 times. Wouldn't there have been time to rip open his jacket? Besides: A couple of guys leaning on a person with a bomb strapped to himself, if he had had one I'm sure he would have let it detonate at that point. But he did not have a bomb. He was just as innocent as all of us here but: He is now dead because of where he lived, because of wearing the wrong clothes, and because of having the wrong skincolor.

Replying to my own post, in view of the current situation, the Police are no longer required to give the customary warning before shooting a terrorist suspect.

And thus, the terrorists are winning. Their goal is to destroy our societies and movements down that slippery slope, like this one, give them what they want.

The Roman Catholic church will have the sense not to "cut off its nose to spite its face". There may be millions of Catholics in South America and Africa, but they dont have much money. Canadian contributions form a signicant portion of the Vatican budget. They would not dare risk losing this money.

I respectfully disagree. The Muslim terrorists in the UK are *never* going to destroy British society. They may change it, but not destroy it. One of the ways it may change is that Muslims may become so unpopular in the UK, that many or most of them will leave. Would this be a good change or a bad change? I know that if Enoch Powell were alive (I am not sure whether he is, but I suspect not), he would "rejoice greatly". One of our Prime Ministers, Pierre Trudeau, made a famous (in Canada) statement in response to our FLQ terrorist threat. He said, words to the effect, "There are a lot of bleeding hearts around who do not like to see the authorities take strong arm action. Well, my advice to them is - go ahead and bleed". People who live by the sword, appreciate and respect strong arm tactics.

Nope, ..I really don't see a pattern here to justify profiling, do you? So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, secret agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winning and former Governor Joe Foss, but leave Muslim Males between the ages 17 and 40 alone lest they be guilty of profiling.

And guess who just bombed London...
